It MIGHT end up being the Zion problem all over again. But the biggest problems with Zion are that he is constantly injured and in 7 years in the NBA he never felt the need to expand his skill set to include things like taking outside shots or putting in effort on defense. Durham would be getting more carries if he was averaging more than 0.3 yards a carry on the ones he has gotten. The rotation of 80% Jones and 20% Gage is working so far. But even if they decided to lighten Jone’s load, the carries are going to Gage and Berry not Durham.

For it to be the game that breaks him, two things need to happen.

1. He plays exceptionally poor that he is pulled in the 3rd quarter or sooner.
2. One of the back ups would have to come in and shine for the rest of the game.

I think it is more likely he either plays well and locks his spot in, or he plays well enough to make it through the game and they decide to give him more coaching with the schedule getting a bit easier.

At FAU, he went 0-3 against ranked teams. Sounds bad until you look at who they were: #9 Wisconsin, #7 Oklahoma, and #5 Ohio State. What coach at Florida Atlantic is supposed to be knocking off Top 10 teams with any regularity?

USC needs context too. Kiffin took the job, then USC got hammered with NCAA sanctions before he ever coached a game. His entire tenure was spent under probation and scholarship restrictions for something Pete Carroll’s program did before Kiffin got there. He went 1-5 against Top 10 teams, but how many coaches are consistently beating elite teams while operating under sanctions? People talk like Kiffin personally drove USC into the ditch, when Carroll left for the NFL and Kiffin inherited the NCAA wreckage.

Then there’s Tennessee.

The year before Kiffin arrived, Tennessee went 5-7 and 0-4 against ranked teams. In Kiffin’s first and only season, they improved to 7-6 and had to play TWO #1 teams: Meyer’s Florida and Saban’s Alabama.

He lost 23-13 at #1 Florida and 12-10 at #1 Alabama, with Bama blocking the potential game-winning field goal.

So what exactly was the expectation? Take over a 5-7 team and immediately beat Urban Meyer’s #1 Florida and Nick Saban’s #1 Alabama?

You can criticize Kiffin for plenty, but just throwing his old “record vs ranked teams” on the table without looking at FAU, USC sanctions, and what he inherited at Tennessee leaves out a hell of a lot of context.
