Cpl. Chris Bordelon, public information officer for SPD, says as soon as Chief Wayne Smith was made aware of the video, the officer in question was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Bordelon says the chief is disappointed about the officer’s behavior, and that it does not represent the values of the department.

Bordelon confirms this same officer was also recently involved in a physical fight that was caught on video during Tequila Fest 2025 at Festival Plaza on May 5. There may be criminal charges associated with that incident, he says.
