It's pretty common to read accounts of how savage the Confederate troops were.
But it was due to reasons listed here.
Forced conscription, lack of supplies, doubt about the war effort itself, and having to fight for something that most Southerners didn't benefit from.
The original democrats were no better than the dums of today....
