Good ole Nate Duncan had the CJ contract as the 3rd worst in the league  Dude is a tool

re: Hollinger's Pelicans Preview

I think his evaluation of Trey as a summer league HOF is obnoxious when he had real moments in big games last year. Not even taking into account any buzz from this offseason it seems dismissive. The entire "Does x player fit with Zion?" narrative is also exhausting. Are we to assume Zion fit better with Adams then Jonas? Projection and placement are reasonable I guess.
I don't see us being better than GS or Denver without major injuries to Steph or Jokic. It's the same with the Clippers but Kahwi has an extensive injury history. The suns are shaky enough where if you promise me 75 games of Zion it becomes a possibility. Grizz Mavs and Twolves I feel are in the same tier as us.

I get that the video is mostly positive but the 4 guys one basketball argument is so dumb. There will be a lot of staggering of minutes to keep 1-2 on the floor at all times and there is a clear guy in line for a reduced offensive load in Jonas. Jonas is great but you aren't taking shots away from Zion/BI.

Literally Screaming Stephen was the only one yesterday to try and spin it that way, and even he was just focused on the Knicks and as he said himself, with zero evidence and Zion or his people never saying once to him it's true, that he only has eyes for his Knicks.

Every piece of coverage I have come across from Ringer podcasts, to ESPN, to message boards all are pointing the finger primarily or exclusively at Zion right now.

The "He's 21" arguments are pretty widespread. Matt Barnes, JWill, the Tom Ziller article this morning. Even Jake on today's locked on Pod mentioned it again.

Unsurprisingly most national media pundits want to lay all of this at the feet of the Pelicans organization and the city while excuse making for Zion. At the outset I will say I don't have an issue necessarily with the age argument. Things like missing rehab sessions, falling asleep in film study, and not showing the standard decorum to CJ are bad, but not necessarily unheard of from rooks and young players. Most players don't come in with knowledge of how to take care of their bodies or how to be a professional. However I think it's disingenuous as frick to make that argument and then turn around and say the Pels making mistakes the first few seasons is a rational justification for his behavior. Fact is most teams who get the first pick are trash and very often stay trash for years. Coming together quickly and batting 1000 are the rare exceptions. Griff made multiple mistakes and even with the successes this year should be under scrutiny, but who is Zion to judge Griff? Is it because he cared about his long term health in a meaningless regular season game that he wasn't in shape for? Or because he played him the Piano? Most players who ask out have at least paid their dues. If Zion isn't ready to be the guy who fricking cares if the Pels aren't ready to compete.
Yes, because even if Zion is a better asset in our minds I don't think there is a better option out there in return. You rarely ever are able to win these kind of trades. Don't know about attaching the 1st tho.

The information void that he is choosing to create is what is allowing all of this negativity to grow like weeds. To me the biggest problem is people are conflating "Not here because of injury" with "Doesn't want to be here." He was here and his rehab clearly wasn't going well because he seemed like he might be gaining weight rather than losing and he got very publicly roasted by HOFers over it. Retreating to a secluded and probably more effective rehab situation after that is not the same thing as he's ready to force his way to New York.
Part of effective rehab sessions probably entails not missing them.
I think my honest expectation was he’d give us our 6 years and short of winning a title would move on. That’s the reality of being a Pelicans fan. CP3 and AD gave us that and I couldn’t begrudge them wanting to leave (AD poisoning the well excluded). For Zion to not even give the minimum effort AD gave with a way better roster in year 3 tells me what I need to know. I’ll root for his success to raise his trade value but I’m not rooting for him for any misguided hope it turns around.
Very excited. Probably will start off with Cathay or Khorne. After a couple of campaigns though it's probably back to mortal empires until the HWH3 equivalent is out.

In fairness, if you break that down further, we are the equivalent of a decent to good team when Zion is on the court. It's when he goes off the court that we fail, that includes games he's playing in

Sorry if my wording was confusing was saying our record hasn't been around 500 because he hasn't been available, not that he's responsible for us not being better when available. I mostly agree with you. Our point differential last year was better than our record for most of the year. As bad as the bench has been over the past few years though I think close games are the biggest reason our record with Zion is where it is.
quote:

But that's the problem... we shouldn't be slightly below .500 with a healthy Zion in his third season.

We don't even have any games with Zion in his 3rd season. We could still suck or maybe the pieces fit when he's there. I don't think that given the western conference our with Zion record is some point of shame. It's not what I want but also not entirely unexpected.
You can have endless justified criticisms of Griff but I have no idea how she found mismanaging Zion's injuries. Glad local media stopped carrying water for him on his health but I doubt anyone in the national media will. Fact is with Zion playing we are slightly below 500 and due in part because of Zion himself it hasn't happened.
quote:

That is ridiculous. Jake does a great job with his podcast, does it daily which is extremely difficult, and always has a ton of stats and so on on hand.

Crewz when he was doing it would ramble for an hour, 30 minutes of which had nothing to do with the Pelicans.

It's hard to come up with content for a daily pod, but like most locked on pods it's pretty surface level. That's good for people who value their time but the old school Mac and Schwan pod is still my favorite by a decent margin. Like Shamit and Mason too but for all the negative with Mac there was a lot of knowledge of the cap and I think some good analysis.

I legit like the fit just a shame the contract is 2 years.

Zion has put out one of the most historical first 85 games ever. There is no blame on him. GTFOH

There is nothing wrong with exerting pressure on a Franchise 85 games in and handcuffing your GM? Does griff even need to spend a 1st to move off bled and adams if Zion is Ja Morant? Griff has to take the vast majority of the blame here for sure for the original mistakes, but the Grizz have the luxury of making their team worse short term and the only difference between the organizations is that since the play in exists they get to pretend they have had playoff teams. Again all that being said I completely understand how Z feels but it's definitely hurting our offseason.

Literally the only guy of his stature to do it, ever.

I mean we are in a brand new era of unprecedented player movement and empowerment, so I'm not as sure as you are that the historical precedent is as relevant. I think him getting the rose rule makes it a 80-20 proposition but I also don't know how likely he is to get it. An injury basically ends his candidacy. I'm probably being pessimistic but saying it's highly unlikely is being too optimistic IMO.

Also we are arguing over whether he stays 3.5 or 4.5 years, not sure it makes a big difference in the scheme of things.
