re: Talk me out of Dan Mullen

Posted by frankenfish on 10/28/25 at 4:50 pm to
It's all a crap shoot. Kelly had the resume and it made sense to assume he'd be successful here, and he wasn't.

So Mullen wasn't successful at Florida, so it makes sense that he wouldn't be successful here either.

The assumption about Kelly was wrong, so who's to say if the assumption about Mullen is wrong as well?

I feel like we can do better, but I do wonder- in this new age would it work to have our GM work to get the best players, and then Mullen's job to just coach them up? Is Texas Tech's success this year due to their coaching, or the players they can buy? Maybe a head coaches recruiting prowess isn't as important in this new era.

I don't think LSU is ready to be among the first to hire for this model, but I do wonder if at some point that won't be more of the normal path.

Joe Brady will probably get an NFL HC gig soon, but that’s the type of HC we need. Kelly doesn’t control one side of the ball, and relies on his coordinators. He’s Midwest Ed O except he can’t recruit as well.

I can buy this thought that Joe Brady might be at Penn State: Joe Brady to Penn State, thanks to Bills owner?
I know nothing, but if I were him I would stick it out to the end of the season:
-stay in strength and conditioning program
- stay in nutrition program
- keep getting reps in practice

Now what? Is he still on scholarship? If he announces he's entering the portal can he still access the facilities?
I don't think there is a chance he's fired after this year, even if we go 7-5 or 8-4.

But they will make him make changes to the O like they did the D last year, and hopefully they'll be harder on him than on Sunbelt Billy and force him to give up control over the O. Then if the struggles continue in a few years when the buy-out becomes managable he'll be fired.

re: Future OL Coach

Posted by frankenfish on 10/2/25 at 5:57 pm to
I do buy the explanation- our OL is taught to block for the RPO so they can't be too aggressive and get caught being ineligible receivers down field if Nuss decides to throw. But, since Nuss is no threat to run the defense doesn't have to defend him in the RPO so it's the worst of both worlds- The OL doesn't block aggressively and the QB doesn't run. And our OL Coach has only been teaching that.

Maybe more of an excuse than an explanation...
I agree; I watched the Right Tackle all night on TV, and it was rarely pretty.

I suspect Arkansas will fire Pittman after their last game at the latest, but we probably won't look at coaching changes untill January. I wonder how that timing could work out.

I kinda feel sorry for BK- he had a Heisman QB but a terrible Defense that kept him out of contention, and now that it seems he's got the D fixed, he has a great pocket QB but the OL is going to be what keeps him from a championship.

Just can't seem to get the stars aligned all at once. And with Baker getting recognized now, might he have head coaching aspirations, so BK might have to start all over on D?

Not being sarcastic, I truly mean this- I'm glad that if we did whiff on a transfer it was on the D line where we're deep. Imagine if it was Braelin Moore who flamed out....

Really happy for Mubinga. He got steamrolled at the end of last season and I wrote him off. He played much more, and better, than I ever would have expected.
I'm not convinced Kelly is the answer, but in context he was the right choice at that time. Way back when the Hat got canned and the hire of Tom Herman fell through, Coach O made sense with his pitch- pay me less as a head coach, I’ll be the recruiting coordinator and use the money you’re not paying me to be head coach to pay the best coordinators. Aranda was that on D and he got lucky with the Slinger/Joe Brady/Joe Burrow combo, but once he won, he decided he needed the big money, and that all fell apart.

So Coach O gets fired and our new AD comes back home from A&M, and says he’s paying top dollar, but wants an established coach (that worked really well with Jimbo, but I digress.) Rumor was it was Riley from Oklahoma, but he went West (to try to avoid the SEC IMO, but what do I know?) So who fits the AD’s criteria?

Saban? He’s not leaving Bama, and just retired, so that wasn’t a possibility.
Riley? Off the board to USC.
James Franklin? Had proven to be a good coach, but not a great one, and had no real motivation to leave Penn State.
Brian Day? Not going to leave The Ohio State University.
Urban Meyer? Please…
Kiffin? Not going to fire Coach O and bring in Kiffin…
Then who? Napier was hot at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, but hadn’t proven himself on the big stage.

So Kelly’s resume was really the best fit for these criteria. Has won everywhere he’s been, three coach of the year trophies, left the program in better shape than when he go there/doesn’t have a history of flaming out. I guess another way to ask, if not Kelly, then who?

Like I said, I'm not convinced Kelly is the answer, but was anyone in their right mind saying at the time, "You know what LSU should do? Give the current DC at Notre Dame, who had only been the DC there for one season, having been at DC at Cinncinnati before that, his first HC gig?"

This kid is ranked below Suggs who we lost. I’m not getting excited over someone who isn’t playing in their team’s playoff game.

I totally get this and agree we shouldn't look at all of this through purple-and-gold glasses, but I think these two play fundamentally different roles. Suggs was known for a quick first step and being a good internal pass rusher, but not being stout against the run. I don't know anything about Mitchell but I am guessing at his size he's being brought in to clog the middle (Suggs' weakness) but may not have Suggs' strength against the pass?
I mean, subjectively I think not, but objectively maybe it is too much to expect it, every year. Admittedly, this is year one, but it looks like the top 4 SEC teams will get into the playoffs, but maybe most years the top 3?

So coming off of the recent signing day and knowing the impact NIL had that, and that we're losing ~50% of each recruting class to the portal then have to rebuild the team each year also through the portal, LSU would need to be at least #3 in the SEC, currently ranked as:
-UGA (3)
-TEX (5)
-Bama (11)
-TN (7)
-USC (14)
-Ole Miss (13)
-MO (21)
-UF
-Vandy
-Ark
-A&M
-Auburn
-OU
-UK
-MS St

So in order to be at least #3 a team would need to go 6-2 in the SEC. There are a lot of variable listed up there, plus injuries (what if Hilton and Guillory were healthy this year?) So I think I've talked myself into thinking it is too much to ask that LSU consistently be among the top 3 strongest programs in the SEC, year in and out, but maybe I just have low expectations.

I agree. Along these same lines I was wondering about Brett Bordelon. I've seen him listed at 250 and 260 and wonder how much "good weight" he can add. I know Breaux was able to come in and add weight in the off-season so it's possible; I can see adding 20 pounds but I'm thinking Brett Bordelon would need 40-50 pounds? Though Bo Bordelon is listed as 310 on the roster, so maybe it's possible...

I just assumed those two dislocated toes are bothering him. I know they would me, but again, I'm just assuming that. Maybe coaches don't want to put the team in the best chance to win?

re: Chris Hilton probable vs aTm

Posted by frankenfish on 10/26/24 at 7:28 am to
I know nothing about the actual situation, but it could make sense not to play Hilton this week, if he's not 100%. Give him two more weeks rest and then he's 100% for the last four regular season games and post season, and would still be eligible for a redshirt.
Redshirt rules
In football, for instance, a player can play in up to four regular-season games and still use his redshirt season (the NCAA recently updated this rule to exempt all postseason competition from the four-game policy).

I see he's listed as a red-shirt Jr., so if he can only redshirt once then this is moot; just morning thoughts over coffee.

re: Bo Bordelon #89

I always enjoy Cole Cubelic's summary each week of each team, and noticed he mentioned Bo in his LSU report this week:
LSU: Rivalry win. Def in full attack mode. 4 great off edge. His hands are lethal. Inside & outside moves. 40 just all over the place. Seems like he's in on every single play. 35 good on the rush. They had QB on the run most of the game. Tackled well in open field again. LBs perused well. Really good vs run. Got yo k game going early. Like pocket movement for QB. Got 2 involved right away. Like how 13 climbs pocket. Changes arm angles. Good quick distribution vs high pressure. Still tries to fit it in some spots that might not be there. 66 good, had some battles with 40. He finishes though! 86 had a good game. Evened up formation & got zone runs going a little. 29 got it going. Runs low, good burst. Has a nice jump cut. RBs struggled in pass pro. 89 gets after it when in there at TE.

That's all I have...

If the republicans had a 40 vote majority,

But I don't feel like that's the plan. The plan is to back only those who support Trump 100%. When the republicans had such a majority, it was by getting the most conservative candidate who could be elected in that district/state elected. Now, if you aren't 100% in agreement with Trump, you are a Rino squish who MAGA says they don't need. And with that, the likelihood of getting a larger majority isn't likely. Those of you in 60% plus red districts can require that, but it's a death sentence for those of us in 50/50 districts.

I'm not saying it's right, but in a smaller population that is that homogenous, you likely know more family members who have benefitted from those programs than you do folks who are ripping off the system, or you are at least willing to consider that you know some who benifit. Here I feel like I don't know anyone who benefits from gov't programs, but see lots of stories about grifters.

Moon Griffon......a lot like Hannity, but without the intelligence.

I'm not sure if that's a shot at Moon or Hannity, but it hits the mark either way.

I would imagine that their decision to return was a big factor in Lunsford's retirement.

And I think Heard, too. Heard wasn't beating out Campbell at LT, or Jones at right, and with Frazier coming back Jones wouldn't kick down to rigth guard to make room for Heard at right tackle, so Heard didn't see a path to playing this year. That at least makes sense to me...

Kelly has already met with multiple candidates and already has his man

I want to hope that's the case. Because if he's a worthy enough DC to stipulate part of him coming is he gets to name his position coaches, he must have enough of a track record to warrant that.
