re: Best Key Lime Pie in BR

Awesome info all around. Thanks everyone!
Gotcha, I hadn't considered making it, but now I would be ashamed to pay good money for pre-made. You say the right juice is the key - another response mentioned Nellie & Joes. Is that the consensus opinion? Other juice recommendation? Thanks for your response.

Have you tried it? I live in that neighborhood and recently saw the sign promoting it, but I've never been a fan of their food.

I would like opinions on best key lime pie in Baton Rouge. I want it for Thanksgiving. Restaurant or grocery store is fine. Thanks in advance!
I love the chocolate pecan pie from Elsie's every year at Thanksgiving. That reminds me, I need to go pre-order now.

Cutrer's has them sometimes at the Thursday Pennington farmer's market. Call them to see if they have it this week. They're friendly people and offer quality meat. 985-229-2478.
I used to include bell pepper trimmings (along with other veggie trimmings and bones) in my homemade stocks. I had a friend who went to culinary school tell me not to include them because they can make the stock bitter. I have learned many things from him over the years.

You may be happy to hear that Popeyes now sells the Blackened Ranch in bottles at grocery stores. I've found it at Albertsons. Helpful bc I would pay for a bunch of the little dippers when I went to Popeyes and store them in a drawer. No more looseys!

No, it wasn't too crowded. There was an empty table next to us the entire time we were there. I'd say 85% full. Some people were sitting on the porch as well.

It was very good in a cool setting. We had a couple of small plates and an entrée each. One small plate was smoked beets w creme fraiche and trout roe. I'm not as into beets as wifey, but they were very good and unlike any preparation I'd had before. Other small plate was rabbit rillettes w sourdough and a mustard and jam. Loved it. My choice of grouper was very good, but I wish I went with my gut and ordered the crab gnocchi. I'll probably get it next time. Grouper was fried beautifully and tasted great, but I found the sauce with tomato, beans and fried okra just okay. I saved the best for last when I say that the duck confit that wifey ordered was the best I've ever had. It was served with muscadines and country ham. Phenomenal combo. I've had the duck confit at the sister restaurant, Mosquito Supper Club, and loved that one. But this is next level. Definite re-order for her and I'll happily help her finish it again lol. Dessert was good as well, a frozen-ish chocolate mousse type of thing. I don't remember the name as it wasn't on the menu. All in all, a great meal. Half the price of MSC and you can pick what you want. Service was very good and our waitress went into great detail about how some dishes were prepared. I reiterate - order the duck! Melissa Martin and her team are masterful at it.

Whatever you do, don't feed them raw to your dogs. They'll love them, but eventually okra-slime-diarrhea will be all over the house. Ask me how I know.

I have found that the quality varies between brands, bought cheaper ones that were crap, but the $16 bar I got at Fresh Market was very good and was huge. An every once in a while impulse buy.
The wings were good! I took my 12 yo nephew to try each of the pickle items. The fried pickles were terrible, coating was too thick and texture indicated they'd been sitting out a while, so maybe they're better fresh. The pickle lemonade was surprisingly not bad. I couldn't drink a whole cup of it, but it was refreshing. Like I said, I really liked the wings, they were the best of the three items.
Berthelot's near Perkins and Essen are damn good. Heads n Tails too.

Went based on your rec and your history of quality posts and shared opinions. My friend from Slidell had to cancel last minute, so I had to go alone. Still had a great time and talked to lots of people at the communal tables. Instead of me and my friend eating and drinking for hours, I treated it like an expensive lunch and just gorged on food for an hour before I left.
As for the food, I felt like Sammy's was the best boiled (was not expecting that would be the case). Just Wingin It came in second for me.
For the dishes, I liked Bin 77's arancini a lot. Thanks!

Has anybody been to Crawfete in previous years and can speak to the experience? Namely how much food and drink to expect and atmosphere.
It is a fudraising event for the BR Epicurean Society, which supports "childhood nutrition initiatives, educational programs and scholarships" according to their web site. $100 is not a cheap ticket, but willing to pay that for a good experience. Thanks!

We really enjoyed the burrata, shrimp, and oyster starters. I ordered the radiatori and was unimpressed. Could not taste any crab. Favorite part of the meal was the antipasti.

I couldn't find it for usual Thanksgiving or Christmas traditions this past holiday season. Haven't seen it stocked since either.
