Lee's gun shyness is what kills LSU and if he starts us out bad, it will be difficult to recoup

Put them into a safe mutual fund or a CD if you are worried about the market blowing up again.
Or pay any excess off the loan that you can as the interest you are accruing outweigh any you will gain (unless they are subsidized)

Simple Wealth Inveitable Wealth (Nick Murray ) - Simplified principles for equity/fund investing
The Intelligent Investor (Ben Graham) - This book is a staple to any investor. A more difficult read though (took me a couple times through to fully understand). It also becomes less relevant after chapter 5-6
Rich Dad Poor Dad (Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter) - This book is great for understanding what liabilites vs assets truely are outside of the traditional definitions give by the accounting and finance world
4-hour work week (Tim Ferris) - You wont want to put this one down when you start reading. Basically, helps you with the philosophy of your attitude toward investing time and resources.
If you want to get serious about investing, I would suggest taking accounting and finance classes.

I agree, parking your money in a higher yield bank it more lucrative than a CD.
To be honest, the returns from CD's and bonds are less than the value of cash's liquidity imo. Unless of course you part your money in savings instruments for other reasons.
