I thought the silent hill 2 remake was great.

I couldn’t get into silent hill back in its heyday and I’m excited to revisit more remakes if they keep churning them out.

I am picking it up but I don't see myself getting much utility out of it. I picked up a steam copy and I don' t have a deep bench on that platform. With a toddler running around, I abandoned the living room when I game so it didn't make sense to pick up titles for consoles I rarely/never use. Really wish Fromsoft/Bandi Namco would implement cross play so I could have a wider pool of potential players.

I don't mind experimentation with the formula. I tend to prefer solo as I age, but I don't mind new wrinkles to the gameplay loop to make MP more interesting/functional that could later be implemented in their mainline releases. I have had a lot of fun playing coop here and there over the past decade (dark souls 1-3, bloodborne, elden ring), but the opportunities aren't there like they used to be.
If people can’t spot some of the obvious flaws of the current AAA landscape, they are willfully ignorant.

I still find games that I enjoy, but it’s far from a golden age.

Finished it this morning. It was a pretty average experience. Gameplay was fine but the plot was a complete bore. I had no investment in anything that was going on but the demon killing was about what I'd expect. I can agree that the mechanics backslid from what they were building with Eternal.

I think I enjoyed the overall premise and presentation better in '16. Defending a mars base from demons with a doomslayer that could not give less of a frick about exposition or instructions was the best version of the plot. Eternal's stakes with trying to end the invasion on earth and the step up in mechanics to engage the player was a solid follow up.

A boring exposition heavy medieval slog with poorly developed characters I don't give a frick about was not the follow up I wanted or needed. I stick by my original assertion that a Quake revamp (or even a new IP!) should have been id's next project instead of this. This entry will be forgotten or will be a cult favorite among a minority of fans like Doom 3 ultimately became.

it's the same issue that infects most creative endeavors in our current era.

The cost of development and the sheer scope have eroded any sense of creativity or vision and replaced it with pursuing formulas to generate a guaranteed return or at least minimize the risk of failure.

The problem that arises is that people grow tired of formulas and look for something new and captivating after a while.

And going to the cost aspect. I can understand that we have not adjusted the pricing of games for inflation in quite some time. However, I will counter that by saying the introduction of microtransactions, in game currencies, and in game storefronts have largely made up the shortfall.

If we were to move to a more rational price point for today's economy, what assurance do I have that the excessive predatory practices of current day game development go away? I already know the answer, there is zero chance. Which is why I largely do not support any sort of a price hike. We are already getting gouged and largely getting mass produced trend chasing slop which means there is no incentive for these devs to change. No sale.

I do think that there is a burgeoning AA/indie market that may help to alleviate some of the problems that some of us have with the mainstream AAA product offerings. Will that result in a renaissance of gaming in its entirety? probably a pipe dream.

Pitchford is such a fig.

They shouldn’t have tried to rush out the last bit of the doom ‘16 & eternal plot through eternals dlc.

I’m don’t find a prequel retread back to the glory days of argent d’nur particularly compelling. I’ve played 10 chapters so far. It’s fine, but I think id have rather seen a different direction. Prequels are so low stakes. I don’t care what happens to these medieval people.

My own personal head canon is that doomguy took a break from killing demons to huff cat piss and cheese his way into the heavy metal universe.
I think the developer usually has a specific vision in mind when they set those parameters.

With a horror game, I think darkness or ambiguity regarding your surroundings is part of the appeal.

I doubt that Capcom wanted you to view that smorgasbord of viscera in full 4k.
BioWare died after they released anthem. They’ve been surviving on reputation and a catalog of IP but it’s evident with each release that any perceived momentum they had was just inertia that has slowly petered out to a crawl.

They will not survive this decade.
I don’t really care about rockstar at this point.

All they are good for are shark cards, gta V re-releases, and infinite delays of anything new.

2001-2013 rockstar was one of the GOATS. Current day rockstar is just an overhyped mess of a studio that’s resting on its laurels.

Delay VI to 2040. IDGAF.
I can see where that might be useful. I used to make clips on Xbox one occasionally for funny moments whenever they heavily marketed the record feature with Kinect. Perhaps it’s aging, but I just don’t care enough to save footage for comedic purposes or to hone my skills at this stage.

I will dabble in multiplayer some still, but it’s harder to coordinate with people post having kids.

I never really got into destiny beyond a superficial level, so I doubt I’ll do any more bungie content.

I am pretty open minded overall but if it’s a live service game with fomo elements, it’s hard to get invested at this stage. Can’t commit the time.

I really get into fromsoft titles. Still play cod occasionally. Play some coop arcade/indie/party type games. Some recent releases with coop elements like darktide or space marine 2 could be fun but I mostly play with randos or solo. Could be fun to coop baldurs gate 3 but I consider that to be a pipe dream at this point.
Never. Doesn’t seem interesting to me. I don’t stream or create any sort of content so it would just be taking up space.

Pivoted to steam and I’m not nearly as prolific as I once was, so it’s petered out a bit

The way I would imagine my ideal quake reboot playing out would be something similar to how bloodborne introduced its arcane elements.

Play it straight for the first third and then adjust the weirdness dial up as you progress.

Could even tie in the strogg somehow as adherents to an evil entity within the slipgate which then would marry the various quake universes together

Both of the newer Doom games are great, but I do think 2016 had the better focus. Eternal got way too deep into the lore.

'16 set the stage early whenever doomslayer was smashing computers and destroying comms equipment because he isn't here for exposition, he's here to kill demons. In fact, the only true pause in gameplay for exposition that I can recall in '16 was a forced interaction with Hayden in his office.

Eternal disappeared up its own arse a bit with the lore elements. It wasn't bad, but I do think they lost some of the focus on what made '16 and doom as a series work. That said, I still enjoyed it for what it was.

Either way, I'm sure this third entry will be good, even if they deviate some for plot/lore purposes..

As a side note, what I really wish we would have seen rather than more background on the doomslayer's time in Argent D'nur or whatever the frick it's called would be a reboot of the original Quake. I think if they did a retelling of that story where you start as a somewhat straight forward soldier type and it slowly gets more psychological and strange as you delve deeper into the plot and explore slipgates would have been a solid follow up to '16 and Eternal.
Im fine with them experimenting on the formula but im not totally sold on the idea. I will be picking it up but it could be something I play habitually or I could bounce off of it quickly.

Im just glad that they are pricing it below standard retail because it does seem to be less of a stand alone title and more of a mp focused knock off.
Staying up late to watch adult swim in junior high was a peak memory.

I loved the era of adult swim spanning space ghost, aqua teen, sealab, etc
