I get how absurd it is for a state judge to hold a federal officer in contempt for enforcing federal law.
But I also understand why the judge is pissed. Jeopardy attaches once a jury is impaneled and double jeopardy prevents a retrial. So, they basically gave the perp a pass on whatever crime he was charged with.

This is the recipe that came with my stand mixer. Been using it for a couple of decades with no problems. I modified it for sourdough:
Start with 60 grams of the starter (about a quarter cup), add 60 grams of whole wheat flour (i.e. half a cup) and 60 grams of water (i.e. a quarter cup). Put it in a warm place for a couple/three hours.
Add one cup of warm water to the mixing bowl of the stand mixer and add the starter. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of salt.
Add two cups of whole wheat flour. Mix it for a minute of so with the dough hook.
Slowly add additional flour, a couple of tablespoons at a time while the dough is mixing until you get a ball that holds together and cleans the sides of the mixing bowl.
Get another bowl, put some olive oil in the bottom and dip your fingers in the oil to work the dough free of the hook and mixing bowl and into the new bowl. Turn the dough ball a couple of times in the olive oil, cover it, put it in a warm place and give it five hours to rise.
After that you are good to go.

First time sourdough pizza crust
Posted by Roscoe14 on 3/31/25 at 3:02 pm
A neighbor gifted us with a sourdough starter and I decided to make pizza dough. I search a number of websites for recipes and found a lot of complicated and sometimes conflicting information.
So, as an experiment, I tried using my basic pizza dough recipe and just replaced the yeast with the sourdough starter and (significantly) increased the rise/proof time.
It was a big hit with the family, the crust had great texture and that "tang" associated with sourdough.
I know most of the folks on this board have their own pizza recipes but am happy to post my (very simple) recipe if anyone is interested.

Y'all, don't listen to this cop.
Not a cop (and never been one). Look, I am favor of bad public employees being financially responsible for their wrongs, I said that in my post. But the answer to that has nothing to with qualified immunity, you need to change the laws regarding indemnification.
And, good luck getting that past the public employee unions.
Why Qualified Immunity Might be a Good Thing
Posted by Roscoe14 on 3/28/25 at 2:33 pm
The other day there was a thread regarding qualified immunity. Responses indicated that most people are against QI because they think an incompetent officer that harms someone should have to pay out of his own pocket. I agree, but QI has nothing to do with that.
This is because state law requires that the City indemnify and defend any officer in a suit related to his public duties (with some narrow exceptions). So, regardless of whether QI applies, it will be the City that pays and the officer won't pay a nickel out of his own pocket.
The reason that plaintiffs fight to strip the officer of QI is not to make him personally liable, he likely doesn't have much in the way of assets. The reason is that stripping the officer of QI is the most direct path to getting the City to open its checkbook.
So, if you think that someone harmed by an officer's wrongful actions should be compensated by the City, then QI is a bad thing.
And, if you think it is wrong that the City (and, really the taxpayer) should have to pay for an officer's blunder, then QI is a good thing.

I keep seeing these types of posts. People need to understand that it takes months, and sometimes years, to put together these sorts of cases. You have to interview dozens, maybe hundreds of witnesses. You also have to subpoena and collate tens of thousands of pages of documents. Then you have to get all the key witnesses in front of a grand jury. The grand jury will likely only meet once a week, so that part of the process alone will take at least a few months. And only then can you ask the GJ for an indictment, which of course is a prelude for any arrests. So it isn't realistic to expect anything on these issues until, at least, the leaves turn.

I tried Soldier and was not impressed. I love Sun Valley but you are right, it ain't cheap. I thought Bogus might make a nice change of pace.

Do I need a new pair of skis?
Posted by Roscoe14 on 3/18/25 at 10:46 am
I bought a new pair of parabolic skis about 20 years ago (Rossignols), and it was remarkable how much better a skier they made me.
I still use those skis, I really like them and they are in great shape. But I am seeing the newer skis have a significantly different shape and I am wondering if there is any benefit to updating again
Any advice would be much appreciated.

re: Canceled Show that Deserved More ...

I was a big fan of the Ellery Queen show from way back in the day. Great period sets, big name guest stars, and good production values (I understand it was very expensive to produce, which is one of the reasons for its cancellation).
Each episode ended the same way, with Ellery (Jim Hutton) breaking the fourth wall to talk about the evidence before he solved the crime.
Unfortunately, only the one season.

Social Security is the third rail of American politics. Right or wrong, the politician who lets it die on his watch will never get elected to anything ever again. And they all know this.
So I think it is a pretty safe bet.

re: Pictures on the Menu

I was in Japan 30+ years ago. Off the beaten path where nobody spoke English. Went into a restaurant, the waiter spoke no English and of course I could not read the menu at all.
Fortunately, the place had wax models of its dishes in the front window (as was apparently the custom there). I beckoned the waiter outside, pointed to what I wanted, he smiled and nodded.
So, occasionally this sort of thing serves a purpose.

re: What is your weeknight steak cooking procedure?
Posted by Roscoe14 on 3/3/25 at 6:35 pm
Liberally salt the steak, then sous vide for 1.5 hours at 135 (sue me, that's how I like it).
After sous vide, rub maple syrup into the steak, add some salt and pepper and sear it in a very hot cast iron pan.
Cream minced garlic into butter. After you turn the steak, spread the garlic butter on the done side.
