I guess we could have had a JMU vs Tulane final too
Are we trying to say OU or Bama would have beaten Oregon is they didn’t play each other?
“Could have made an all SEC title game”

In what world would that happen. The SEC has not won a playoff game against a top 10 team in 2 years off the 12 team tourney. The average loss is 14 points!

That can all change quickly, but damn, let’s be honest about it.
What has the conference accomplished in post season play the last 3 years? I don’t have time to do all the math right now but I bet it’s averaging 10+ point loses against real teams.
Top dogs? You got your shite pumped by 35.
Playoff games are all that matters, what is the SEC’s biggest playoff win against an out of conference opponent the last few years?

Texas beating an autobid ASU in overtime? There aren’t many other options.
They have no 5-starts and three 4-star high school recruits coming in next year, coming off a playoff season. Most teams competing for the title don’t rely on the portal like that.
Relying on the transfer portal will eventually bite them in the arse. When some high priced guys don’t pan out it’ll create culture issues. This will be their last playoff run with Cig.
When you have 16 teams, no divisions, and an 8 game schedule the conference standings don’t mean much. Do you honestly think Bama was the best team in the SEC?
Alabama was not the best regular season SEC team. Oversized conferences make standings all out of whack.

The committee, AP, and coaches all had them as the 5th best SEC team, even before they got blasted by UGA in Atlanta.
Agree on Ole Miss, UGA and A&M.

Bama and OU were the issue. The committee decided to make qualifying for the SEC championship game an autobid, and had to put OU in due to the head to head.

The frustrating part is in 2023 when Bama got in over FSU, resume didn’t matter, it was all about putting teams in that had a chance to win. This year it totally flipped. No one thought Bama or OU had a shot, still got the invite.
Miami clearly belonged, how many of the 5 SEC teams did?
When is the last time the SEC beat a legit team in the playoff (autobids don’t count)?

I think it UGA over TCU, but could be proven wrong. Does the PAC12 have more recent playoff success than the SEC?
I do have basis for this opinion. They beat Indiana last year, they at least got a shot of knocking them off. They lost by 3 to Miami on the road with a first time starting QB and new defensive coordinator. Ole Miss and Oregon aren’t unbeatable.

This isn’t pre-Covid/portal/NIL. These aren’t the ND teams they would sneak into the playoff to get slaughtered by a Clemson or Bama super-team.
Being an Independent is a tough business model for sure. It causes them to have to front load schedules and they don’t have conference fellows advocating for them in the committee. It cost them a spot in the playoff when they would have a legit chance to win it.

It has some pluses too, Last year they made a run and didn’t have to split their payout. They were able to opt out of their bowl game without having to pay any conference fines.

Ultimately it’s what they have done for over 100 years. Over the that time they have had periods of being relevant and irrelevant. If you don’t think we are in a relevant period right now you are kidding yourself.

Good point, Freeman has shite the bed losing to bad teams. Two of those were in his first season, still bad.

I’d argue his teams get better as the season goes on. They were rolling against this year. Compared to how DeBoer’s teams have finished seasons at Bama, I don’t see how they are more relevant than Notre Dame, unless we look further in the past.
Last year they started the season beating a ranked SEC team on the road. Finished with a loss in the title game. In between had a 13 game winning streak, won the Orange Bowl, beat the SEC champ in the Sugar Bowl, and gave Indiana their last loss.

This year they got an active 10 game winning streak. Could beat any team in the country. If/when they lose they don’t embarrass themselves.

Notre Dame is living in the past, meanwhile they have more wins in the 12 team playoff against non-auto bids than the entire SEC combined.

In 4 years Marcus Freeman has never lost a game by 2 touchdowns. Bama has done it 4 times in the last 18 games (twice to teams with losing records).
Don’t forget ND’s first two games were by far the hardest in the country. With a Redshirt Freshman QB and new defensive coordinator. The defense greatly improved as they learned the system and got the right guys on the field.

They went on a 10 game winning streak to end the season last year and went on a run. They could have made some real noise this year.
