re: Derrick Hall
Posted by JJtheAuburnFan on 1/13/21 at 6:14 pm
Either way we’re looking to play more LBs that normal so I was trying to get a clue of how Mason played his rush/OLB type players and if they’d be closer to the line or not. I’d love to see Hall in a position like he was in high school, often on the edge but also lined up in a traditional OLB and blitzed and rushed from that spot at times as well. He’s a lot better athlete than ppl know

Umm he only dropped back in coverage 13 times last season and allowed 2 catches for 22 yards but ok lol. He’s been trained to do one thing since he got on campus of course he’s not great in coverage. He does have the skillset to ability to play LB though. He played both sides in the allstar game he’s an athlete I’m not worried was just uncertain what his position would be under Mason

Seeing the news about TD moving back to LB and the plans of running a 3-4 defense, does this mean Hall should be considered an OLB now? He’s extremely strong but I don’t see him as a DE in the 3-4 scheme unless the DE are spreaded way out over the OTs but that’s unlikely. Leads me to think guys like him and Romello are now considering OLB now? Even if the still have basically the same job as a BUCK I don’t know if they’ll still line up on the line of scrimmage or from a traditional OLB position. Just curious.
re: Different Opinion - Big Kat and Newkirk

Getting Newkirk back definitely wouldn’t hurt. He’s got potential as a pass rusher and can be disruptive at times. I know the Bigkat int against lsu was on a tipped pass by Newkirk who was being double teamed and still made a play. Newkirk, Banks, Hardy and Hunter are the only ones I see having a chance to generate pressure in a 3-4 as far as lineman. Can’t disagree about Bigkat I’m not sure were he’d fit in Mason scheme.
re: Stopping the run

Steele’s gameplan was the reason for AU giving up so many rush yards. He spaced out the DTs apart more than they usually are and the DBs played more zone coverage than any game Steele has coaches since he’s been here. Tennessee is actually pretty good with deep passes that’s why the CBs played 10-15 yards off every play and tenn took full advantage of it by running quick out routes and dig routes etc. They picked up multiple first downs but the point was to limit the deep shots which it did. The bad was giving up multiple easy completions and first downs, the good was the pick 6 and giving your DBs a better chance to make a play downfield. As for the run D, the DT being spaced out means nearly every play an Olineman will go unblocked and get to the second level immediately, that means out 6’0 230ish pound LBs agains 6’5 320+ Olineman and your asking them(Owen&Zakoby) to shed that lineman plus make the tackle. As talented and tuff as Pappoe and Zakoby are there’s not much they’re gonna be able to do when an Olineman comes at the immediately and isn’t even the lead blocker. Steele should’ve kept the zone coverage in the secondary but kept the DTs inside like usual so it would be easier for the LBs to come in and clean up like the should. Britt and Zakoby were great at it. Trues and Newkirk are capable of holding there gaps it’s the 2’s Z.Walker and even sometimes Colby tend to play the DT position like there still at the DE position and allow gaps to form in the middle. Would’ve been a big help if the 2 jucos played like we thought they would

Well Jones has experience at RG now, the more he plays the better he’ll get, will surely be a starter next year

Looking at our class and remaining targets “losing” him definitely hurt and adds to reasons to panic about recruiting. I’m not sure how fast he is but he’s taken plenty of returns to the house so it must be good enough. I’ve seen him play lots of times too including the game Roc Taylor got the best of him. He’s a finesse type player for sure, an athlete and does everything with little to no effort. Of course that’s not your ideal type CB1 but the amount of plays and turnovers he creates can’t be overlooked. Another reason the kept him #1 is because of how he plays, he talks and tries to get in your head, but backs it up 9/10. He’s a less physical more athletic Jalen Ramsey.

There’s nothing wrong with WR recruiting it could be much worse with the teams we recruit against. You won’t find any other WR coaches that can recruit at Burns level that isn’t already at a stable job. Development is still and issues but recruiting is fine. Of course it could be better, same can be said about every position. We were blessed to find an immediate good recruiter to replace Craig, could’ve hired just anyone and been behind the past few years in WR recruiting instead he’s brought in multiple high rated guys that were pursued by major teams. Development also is effected by the offense and the offense has never been too passing friendly and definitely not complex just simple routes so don’t blame the WR coach for that when they’ve basically been in a system to block 90% of the time. WR is one of the most talented groups on the roster, if you’ve lost faith recruiting there then idk what to tell you. Auburn signed the #7 class last year. Pretty good to get near top 5 with who they recruit against.

Hamm will have the best season on the OL so I see him as the breakout there. I think jones will start but isn’t set in stone. Also sure DJ will do even better as the starter, only got a glimpse of what he’s capable of last year but hard to see Tank not eventually taking over but it’s DJs spot to lose. Flash and Eli both can have breakout years in a more open passing offense. Bo can improve his passing 500-800 yards I think is possible for him. And can’t see Frazier not making a lot of noise even as a freshman I think he’ll be apart of the offense. On the DL I personally want to see TD have his moment. If he can take over the rush role and let Bigkat handle the end spot both will excel. LB outside of the top 4 from last year I can see O.Brothers step up some, he’s a bigger body and more fit for a true ILB. Very physical. And my breakout in the secondary is a tie between Tennison and Domio

Definitely, there’s no way the will keep all those guys happy for 3-4 years. Its weird how some of them preached they wanted early PT but continue to go to a stacked roster. Uga must be selling something reaalllyy good.

Like Jones said we’re leaning on taking only one because of the current depth chart. No doubt it would’ve been nice to get him on board but they have had guys ahead of him and acted accordingly.

I think lsu would take him. They have 0 oline commits at the moment. Everything I read says au-bama au-lsu or au-okl st so I really like our chances either way. I do agree with him not being a take for bama rn though.

Current recruiting class
Posted by JJtheAuburnFan on 5/17/20 at 3:30 pm
With the recent surge in recruiting and many expecting it to continue into the summer, what would you grade the class as of now? Considering were still early in the process but what do you guys think so far. Also who’s your must get prospect for this class?
I personally am pleased so far. Adding DD at QB can only help with OL as well as prospects in Texas. I think we end up with Williams the WDE and Roberts the OG, Davis’s teammate, before the summer is over. That’s pretty good heading into the season.

Physicality is definitely not against him what are you talking about. I first watched his sophomore film on YouTube the his junior year on hudl. Since his first season on varsity he’s been laying bit hits at S and CB. He doesn’t shy away from contact on offense or defense I seen multiple plays he ran over defenders down the field.

Zerier replies to someone on Twitter and said he’s pushing 300lbs and Coffeys weight is from the beginning of last football season lmao I’m sure he’s bigger now he was always a pretty built guy tho some tackles can play at around 285-300lbs and be successful. He’s naturally strong I’m sure he’ll be fine once they start hitting the weights. Also heard Z.Walkers coach says he’s probably the strongest kid he’s ever seen

DL I think will be very deep, probably a 8-10 man rotation instead of the usual 6-8. A lot of the are capable of moving around so it’s hard for me to try to pinpoint 4 out. I know BigKat and Truesdell are starters but does BigKat start at BUCK or SDE? If he’s at the rush spot I can see TD, Handy, or Butler the top juco to compete for the SDE spot. I think those 2 jucos will impact a lot more than we expect. Both of them are very violent and can also get low and get pad leverage. Banks film is impressive to me for a DT, he excelled in run stopping and pass rushing and created turnovers. Butler dominated some of the top juco OTs when he was at independence CC. I could see Bulter starting at DE and BigKat,Hall,TD handle the rush spot. Banks Miller Hardy and Hall are the next players called up depending on which off the starters may be tired or something.
BigKat, Newkirk/Miller,Truesdell, Butler/TD
Hall/TD,Butler/Miller/Banks, Truesdell, BigKat/Handy
Plus there’s plenty more capable of doing something next season. Colby Wooden, Z.Walker(who could also potentially start I just feel the other guys have a tiny bit of a step on him atm but he’s definitely quality depth.

Yea sounds about right. I think Troxell has All Sec potential when he’s healthy. The juco’s will be solid depth at the least. Both could potentially start then again the could be backup LT/RT. We have options though hopefully they get in rhythm.
