re: Arkansas fans, let’s talk baseball

An intelligent post on the Rant? Seems deserving of a reply. DVH changed our pitching rotation last weekend. He took our Friday starter who was pitching well and moved him to the back of the bullpen. We’ve had the injury bug. For the second year in a row our projected Friday starter won’t throw a pitch for us all season (Wiggins), and we’ve had two major bullpen injuries—our closer Tygert and our most reliable middle relief (Frank). So DVH is trying to work some voodoo by moving smith to the bullpen to try to get him in multiple games if needed over the weekend (a la Kevin Kopps). If they don’t need him Friday or Saturday, then he becomes our de facto Sunday starter.
Friday we will start a transfer Hunter Holland. He’s been steady and pitched lights out last week against Auburn but LSU is a different beast. I think you guys win that one somewhat comfortably and we don’t burn smith because we are playing from behind.
Saturday we will start Will Mcentire who had a terrible fall and spring but has really come into form. He was an absolute stud down the stretch for us and the reason we made it so far in Omaha. Pitched a complete game against La Tech and went six solid innings last week. That’ll be the game I think we win.
Sunday (if we use Smith on Saturday) we will start Cody Adcock. Actually he may have pitched the best of all our sp‘s last week but he’s wildly inconsistent. If he’s landing his breaking ball Sunday will be a battle. I think the stage will be too big for him though.
I imagine we go 1-2, winning Saturday’s game.
Offensively, this is the best team we have had in a while. I heard we are on pace for 103 HR’s this season. Jared Wegner and Bohorfen have been absolute studs. Josenberger is our best lead off we have had in a while. Stovall and Slavens were rock solid for us last year and have both improved. Slavens isn’t hitting for as much power this year but is way more patient at the plate and taking what the pitcher gives him more. Everyone shifted against him last year and I don’t think you could do it this year because he’s using the whole field much better (the lack of shifts may be a pitch clock thing too). Bolton our ss is our weakest batter but he’s solid for singles. We just have a great lineup top to bottom. I don’t think we have as many mlb prospects as lsu but we don’t seem to have gaping holes.
I believe our schedule this far has been the hardest in the sec according to different sos metrics, so these stats don’t seem to lie but we also haven’t faced anyone close to your talent level. I feel decently confident with our sp’s but our bullpen can be shaky. Carter and Smith are the only ones I feel truly confident in. Everyone else makes me sweat.
Good luck this weekend. Keep your opossums off the field and GO HOGS!

He got worked over pretty well last week at Vandy, at it gave DVH to start Wicklander last week and Nolan started the Tuesday game. Scroggins is out with a sore arm so Wick got the #2 spot this week and Nolan got the #3. Not sure how things will shake out when Scroggins gets healthy. But he pitched out of the pen not too long ago and looked good doing it (maybe against Auburn).

I'll give you his performance against Vandy was mediocre, but that was partially due to his defense, and he got yanked for not covering first. First batter was a weak grounder that was well placed and advanced on a throwing error. 2nd one walked. 3rd batter was a screw up as Franklin and Martin collided. 4th batter was another grounder, and he didn't cover on the 5th batter.
His performance against Auburn was solid. Made it through 3 innings giving up nothing and then gave up 1 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th. Not too shabby for a freshman. Also highlighting my point that he can get through the lineup 1-2 times.
Against Ole miss he went 4.2 and only gave up 2 runs.
He sucked against Bama.
And against Mizzou went 4.1 innings only giving up a run.
He isn't going deep into games, but for a freshman pitcher that was going through spring practice with the football team, I think he has done ok.

Noland is usually good for the first 1-2 times through the lineup and then the wheels fall off. If he gets through the 3rd or 4th, we've got Kostyshock for 1-2, Zeb for 1, Denton can get us 1, and I think Cronin can come in for the 9th. Ramage makes me nervous, but he didn't pitch much yesterday. Hopefully he can pull his head out because he was solid at the beginning of the year. I think this is gonna be a 7+ score from both teams though. Gonna have to get outs!
