re: Nuss nicked up in practice per Frank

All this talk about whether Van Buren should "choose" to burn his redshirt is incredibly antiquated. He is being paid to be available to play football for LSU, every practice, every meeting, every game, when physically able. He forfeited control over his redshirt when he accepted NIL dollars.
I get that these concepts are (most likely) not expressed in the NIL agreements. But they should be, and they to me they are implied. Every player who opts out when healthy should forfeit NIL dollars, at bottom a pro rata amount for games that the player refuses to play.
Van Buren is not being "unselfish" (as radio commentators keep saying) if he "decides" to burn his redshirt. He is being paid to play right now. So play if you are healthy enough to play, or be penalized financially. Same for Nussmeier.

Unfortunately rock bottom is coming. Arkansas wins 37-20.

Just admit that you're not smart enough to understand the legalities of this, not plugged in enough to know the facts of this, and not important enough for your opinion on these circumstances to matter. You'll feel a lot better.

LSU has had too many "lost" seasons. 1999, 2004, 2016, 2021, and now 2025. Five seasons of the past 26, or around 20%, in which the head coach is either fired mid-season or accepts a new job before the season ends. That is no way to build an elite program. I don't care how many NFL guys you get to cheer for on Sundays.
re: Perhaps Biggest of Kelly's Mistakes

I don't blame Kelly for replacing Moffitt. LSU had gone soft in 2020 and 2021, getting repeatedly manhandled, including by UCLA. Kelly believed that Moffitt, Corey Raymond, Blake Baker, and others were part of the soft, failed regime that he was there to correct.
re: Kiffin - pros & cons *spoiler, he's our guy*
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 10/29/25 at 10:34 am to TDsngumbo
The tie breaker for Kiffin vs. any other coach under serious consideration is the added benefit that you simultaneously knee-cap two SEC rivals, both Ole Miss and Florida.
Even hiring Dan Lanning or Marcus Freeman (both impossible) does nothing to undermine the existing SEC power structure. Hiring Heupel or Elko would do so, but neither seems possible. Hiring Clark Lea sinks Vanderbilt, but I have a hard time believing that Vandy is a long-term obstacle once Pavia departs. Drinkwitz sinks Missouri, but obviously Missouri is less of a traditional problem for LSU than Ole Miss.

Brian Kelly may be past his prime, not elite enough to win big in the SEC, etc., but he has not exactly been stubborn. He has shown he will fire anyone on LSU's staff who he believes stands in his way of what he thinks he needs to win. He has been perfectly comfortable spending tens of millions of other people's money in order to do so.
Has no offensive or defensive philosophy to be stubborn about. He recruits and internally promotes totally different styles of QBs and RBs. He rebuked the transfer portal and buying players until he decided he needed them to compete.
Again, he may not be good enough to make a playoff at LSU, much less win any championship of any kind. But I think it's a mistake to confuse his prickly personality for operational stubbornness.

re: Has there ever been a worse ROI in the NIL era than LSU's offense?
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 9/28/25 at 5:28 pm to stuntman
Last season, Ole Miss was top five nationally in total defense, total offense, scoring offense, and scoring defense. It's truly insane that they lost three regular season games with those numbers.
In other words, statistically, 2025 LSU is not in the same league as 2024 Ole Miss. Not on either side of the ball.

What I take from this nonsense is that the MAGA right and the Woke left deserve each other. We are screwed as long as they continue to control politics and power on both sides of the spectrum.
re: Florida's offense plays into the LSU defense's hands
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 9/9/25 at 8:10 am to iamandykeim
The problem is that LSU's offense likewise plays into Florida's defensive hands. Florida could not contain Byrum Brown (USF QB) scrambling for first downs and designed QB runs, which held back Florida's pass rushers (the strength of Florida's defense) and allowed USF to move the ball.
Nussmeier has obviously shown that he will not scramble upfield, much less keep the ball on the zone read. LSU will miss Josh Williams in this game. He was a warrior in Gainesville last year, while Florida's defensive line teed off on our line and Nussmeier.

Texas Rangers season ticketholder here. Langford is a great athlete who has shown pretty good pop at the plate (21 HR this season), but he's been a .250 hitter over his first two full seasons. I like Wyatt a lot, but it's not like he's tearing the league apart. I expect both Crews and Langord to be contributing major leaguers for the next decade. It's unclear whether both, one, or neither will be a star.

I remember similar talk last season after Bama lost to Vandy and Tennessee just before they came in to Tiger Stadium and prison raped us.
re: Les Miles Put Clemson on the Map
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 8/27/25 at 11:23 pm to TheBigHurt
We were powerless to contain Deondre Hopkins in that game (13 catches for 191 yds, 2 TDs). Clemson outgained LSU 445 to 219 and had neary four times as many first downs (32 to 9). Mettenberger was bad in the game and airmailed the 3rd down throw that could have sealed the win on LSU's final drive prior to Clemson's game-winning field goal.
The 2012 Peach Bowl performance by LSU (back when all starters played in the bowl) shows that LSU was no lock to win the SEC (vs. No. 3 Georgia), much less the national championship, had LSU held on against Bama in the TJ Yeldon screen pass game in Tiger Stadium.

re: How do you feel going into this season compared to 2019 season?
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 8/26/25 at 11:21 am to cats15
It's hard to compare opening weekend feelings of 2019 with 2025 because the 2019 team did not open against Texas in Austin. We got to see Burrow and the new offense roll against a decent Georgia Southern team (10-3 in 2018) in week one before the major test in week two. That made many of us much more confident about what the team would ultimately become.
re: Where is everyone parking for the Clemson game?

I bought a parking pass in C-1. It's in the SE corner of the campus.
Clemson folks, please let me know any logistical thoughts on the walk from C-1 to the downtown bars, and the walk from C-1 to the stadium.
Many thanks.

Nobody rational predicts that LSU fires Kelly absent a collapse of 6-6 or worse that cannot be excused by losing Nussmeier. But 8-4 or 7-5 creates a poisonous environment leading into 2026 that could cause the wheels to fall off during the 2026 season, in which LSU plays Clemson again plus nine SEC games.
re: Let's talk about this wildly overrated Clemson defense....
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 8/20/25 at 8:16 am to mwade91383
Clemson was mediocre last season against the run. Good against the pass.
LSU was dead last in the SEC in rushing last season.
So there is obvious concern about LSU's capability to expose weakness in Clemson's defense.

re: A new way to beat Clemson
Posted by ATLTiger24 on 8/13/25 at 12:56 pm to Akiro
The teams that beat Clemson last year (Georgia, Louisville, South Carolina, and Texas) ran the ball down Clemson's throat. All rushed for over 185 yards and over 6 ypc. Even Louisville ran for 210 yards (7.8 ypc) againt Clemson. Clemson was 85th against the run nationally.
Conversely, Clemson was 27th nationally against the pass, which makes sense given that Clemson has NFL pash rushers and a very good secondary. Tyler Shough struggled throwing the ball against Clemson (158 yds), as did Lenoris Sellers (164 yds).
LSU can win the game if it can run the ball on Clemson like Louisville did. We shall see.

Wisconsin just doesn't have the roster to compete with LSU (opener 2016)
Mississippi State just doesn't have the roster to compete with LSU (opener 2020)
UCLA just doesn't have the roster to compete with LSU (opener 2021)
Florida State's coach is a joke and they have no chance of beating LSU in the Dome (opener 2022)
No chance LSU loses five straight openers to an incredibly average USC team on the fast track in Las Vegas (opener 2024)

Most impressive to me is that it's five years later and five quarterbacks that LSU faced in 2019 are still starting in the NFL: Jordan Love, Bo Nix, Tua, Jalen Hurts, and Trevor Lawrence.
