Gonna be taxable income. If $400-500K paid in a lump sum the first year, they will owe Uncle Sam well over $100k. If paid out over 4 years, they might owe roughly 20-25 % per year. Just seat of the pants estimates. Let's get a over/under bet going on how many of these rocket scientists don't fil...

This may turn out to be a more difficult system to perpetuate than we currently think. The spirit and letter of the laws concerns the payment to athletes for the use of their name, image, and likeness for ongoing commercial purposes. It was not intended to facilitate university recruiting programs...

I see a potential problem with the way NIL might be going in resentment of the have-nots towards the haves. Potential impact to team morale and function. Some consideration should be given to a team oriented Name, Image, and Likeness ad revenues where everyone shares the proceeds. ...

Kelly recruited this potential class while being paid by ND, and recruiting costs such as travel, hotels, meals, etc were on the ND tab. It would be highly unethical to now use that basis to recruit for another school. If a ND recruit were to contact LSU/Kelly on their own nickel to inquire about ...
