You don't need any special tools for straight out of the box these days. They're packaged to be as consumer friendly as possible, and tools are included if needed....

Yep, I ride a Diamondback Sync'r with a nice DT Swiss wheelset on it, about $1400 for the bike and another $500 for the wheels, and I still hate taking it to shops because of the Dicks/Academy stigma.

For less than $500, used on Craigslist or check out bikesdirect. I ride with a few guys that have motobecanes through BD and they've been happy with them. They're based out of Texas and the owner apparently is pretty hands on with customer support, according to what I've read on MTBR....
