Pen raised quail near BR

Posted by keyboard_warrior9 on 12/2/24 at 1:08 pm
Anyone have any recommendations where I can get my hands on some pen raised quail to work my dog on around BR? Looking to do a couple of runs before woodcock season kicks in.

Does anyone know if the tt25 is able to connect to a separate device like a tri tronics device or once it is connected to your alpha, you can’t connect it to an older controller?
I’m definitely leaning more to the Garmin 200 because of all the reasons listed above, especially the training functionality over the Dogtra. However, are all those features worth the extra $400 is the question.
I was originally dead set on a garmin but I don’t think I need all the bells and whistles it provides… my main concern about the pathfinder is how you use your phone instead of a handheld and how it would drain my phone battery

Additionally, I want to know more about how well the pathfinder works when you lose signal. I’ve certainly been places where I didn’t plan to lose it but did and if I haven’t already uploaded a map, I’d hate to be SOL
Who here has any experience with the Garmin Alpha 2/3 or the Dogtra Pathfinder 2? What are your opinions? I’m looking at both for my Braque Francais who I’m training to be a woodcock dog.

I’ve done both and I haven’t seen any issue there… I usually use my regular non tsa locks but keep a set of tsa locks on my carryon just in case

thinking about slipping a AirTag

Not a bad idea. I’ve had guns miss a flight to Canada once and we had to make the airport hold them until we flew out
It’s a big thing in New Zealand but then again they do things way differently than we do so take that for what it’s worth. My 2 cents is that they weren’t good enough to kill a Hawaii rio so they stumbled upon a peacock and spun the episode to make it look like he did such a great thing for “conservation”
I fly with guns at least 5 times a year. My 2 best pieces of advice are to get a lock for every hole and to absolutely make sure they put that piece of paper with your signature in the case with your guns. They say to make sure there is a lock on every hole but I’ve only seen it enforced a handful of times. One time in Washington the baggage guy tried to pry open my case to prove a point that my case didn’t have enough locks even though there was one for every hole. He made me buy extra locks and duct tape the case… as for the slip of paper, I have heard horror stories from friends about TSA not seeing the slip and confiscating the guns because they weren’t checked in properly. I had to tell the new baggage lady at MSY last year how to do it because she almost forgot mine.

Oh, and don’t skimp on a shitty case. I’m convinced they try extra hard to break your stuff because they know they are guns. I have seen them crack Pelican cases before and I consider those good.
I just ran into them at a trail head and didn’t want to be that guy who interrogates everyone as they get to their trucks. He did mention that this year has been really tough though. I was scouting for ducks and didn’t find a drop of water so I figured it had to be related to the drought as well
BR, but I’m willing to go wherever. My place isn’t far from home though
They look almost identical to a snipe but bigger. Those bastards are hard to find in a dirt field so I’d hate to know what finding a dead woodcock in a leafy forest is like

Getting into woodcock hunting

Posted by keyboard_warrior9 on 12/28/23 at 5:10 pm
I ran into some woodcock hunters yesterday while on some public and it really peaked my interest. It’s the only game that LA has to offer that I haven’t killed and have been wanting to for a while now but just never had the chance. I really enjoy upland hunting and from what I’ve learned so far, they are pretty challenging to hunt.

I know there are some guys here that go after them with dogs and I was going to see if anyone would let me tag along sometime soon to see what it’s about. Hell, I have a place that I’ve seen some in the past that I I’ve just never tried because I don’t know anybody with a good dog. Any advice or direction is appreciated.

Looking for turkey lease

Posted by keyboard_warrior9 on 12/29/21 at 10:57 am
I know this is a complete shot in the dark but I'm looking for a turkey or a deer/turkey lease to join. I'm currently on a waitlist for a club north of Jackson MS but I'm looking for something a little closer. Id be willing to join a deer club to turkey hunt if thats what it takes. I just want a place I can go on a regular basis or take the SO to kill her first bird that doesnt take 4-5 hours in the car to get there.
So what’s the deal with the free canes??
Man that just gave me flash backs…
Regardless if it lands just east or west of BR, we are fricked when it comes to tree damage…
