re: And boom...Euro go bye-bye (Gazprom news)

Yep. I'm back in Europe. Family is happy about it, since they missed living here. Let me know if you get this way!
Funny you mention real estate. My lovely bride has gotten serious about buying property in Al Sace, so we may be here for quite some time now.

Interesting perspective. I don't have that longer term view since I've only been out of the US for about a decade. And maybe it is region specific, but I've lived in the rural countryside and in mid-sized cities, but only in Germany. Here, jobs are plentiful (but you are right that wages are relatively stagnant), food is affordable, and restaurants are full.
On the other hand, fuel and energy costs are very high and it is harder to find an affordable home to buy, so more are renting. All considered, I wouldn't call life here "difficult" like in the East of years past.
I would agree with your family about upcoming year. The weak Euro, inflation, high energy costs, etc. are causing a lot of fear, but I don't see this as so much different from other parts of the world... The main differentiator is the uncertainty in natural gas supply.
It will be an interesting time.

quote::confused: Maybe I am not a normal person, but after living in Europe for a while, I find the life here quite comfortable.
Life is already quite hard for normal people in Europe.
And.... Gas flow resumes from NS1
But the flow rate is reduced, and I think Russia will keep it that way to maintain an environment of pressure and uncertainty on Europe, giving Putin maximum leverage. If he shuts it totally down, he loses his largest weapon.

Not a mathematician or computer scientist
Would proving P=NP provide any information toward actually solving NP problems?
Is it possible to prove P=NP but still be practically unable to solve NP problems?
I guess I'm separating the academic potential that P could = NP and the practical real world potential of actually solving NP problems. So could we prove P=NP, but still have encryption safe?

Member of the orb weaver family. We have similar ones (up to 6-8") all over Hong Kong. They make massive webs across the trails and you are sure to run into dozens over the course of a hike.

I hear you. I'm in VXUS (-3.8% YTD), but unfortunately more heavily in VUG, VWILX and VTI (-15%, -13% and -9.7% YTD respectively). I'm not going to mention my individual holdings which are all over the place!
But we're both young and have plenty of time. I don't look at my accounts but once a week or so.

Surprised it is that high. I posted in a lot of game threads in the late 2000's.

re: What % of LSU students are equally as intelligent as the average Ivy League student?
Posted by Spirit of Dunson on 6/1/21 at 5:03 pm
I went to LSU and an Ivy for grad school. My observations were that the top 5 in my class at LSU could hang with the top at the Ivy. Also, the bottom 5 in my Ivy were almost as worthless as the bottom at LSU.
The difference I noticed was the fat middle part of the distribution... the kids in Ivy were just smarter and cared a lot more than my LSU cohort. I found the Ivy curriculum more intellectually challenging and broad. But they also weren't distracted by football.

re: What’s going on with Exxon?
Posted by Spirit of Dunson on 5/26/21 at 8:06 pm
Honestly, the largest corporations attract some of the smartest engineers and scientists. If there will be solutions developed to solve the most challenging problems, then corporations will have to be part of that effort. Additionally, they marshall huge market power, spurring innovation in suppliers and service providers. So by adopting strategies and policies toward more renewables, they will drive more innovation if not in their own shop, then in their partners.

I'd prefer not to get into the politics, but when you are a publicly traded company, you have to answer to shareholders.

The three largest shareholders are vanguard, blackrock, and fidelity. I think the next grouping are large public pension funds.
re: Turks and Caicos has strict mask mandates everywhere including outside in 90 degrees
Posted by Spirit of Dunson on 5/25/21 at 5:16 pm
In Hong Kong, we average about 1 case every 3-5 days and still wear masks at all times. It is 90 degrees and maybe 70% humidity. I don't see this changing until maybe 2022.

quote:I suggest you read the articles in the magazine and not just the cover. There is an entire section on the future of banking, and it is more focused on digital currency, (which is NOT the same as crypto) and the role a central bank plays vis-a-vis private banks and their role in capital. It is not so focused on crypto currency.

I am not picking a side in the debate, only asing you to read things before you bring such posts here. Otherwise, we are turning the Money talk even more into the Poli talk.

Wall Street Journal video
As someone that works in global supply chains, this is the best video I have seen that explains the issue in an easily understandable way.
