re: Let's talk Cigars

So my "corporate B&M" doesn't carry My Father. The lady who manages the location near me said that there was some dispute between corporate and My Father. However they carry LADC and San Cristobal. My locally owned B&M's prices are just ridiculous. A SC there is $18 compared to $12 at the Corp B&M. So I usually end up ordering my MF singles online and everything else at the corporate B&M.

I've been making an effort to diversify my humidor. My humidor used to be Fuente with a few randoms. Now it's about 20% Fuente, 30% Pepin Garcia blends, and the rest is singles & samplers. Avg stick cost has gone up as well. 30 year old me would kick 50 year old me's arse for spending $30+ on a single.

ETA: The bargain cigars have gotten so much better than they were in the late '00s. I have a few Toranos in my humidor from back then. I tried to smoke one recently and moved on after the first ash. I've had Factory Smokes and seconds that were much better. (I've heard the Rocky Patel Mulligans are good.)

I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with the fallout from episode 4.

Take a few minutes to look at connections between online merchants and the brands. For example Holts has setup connective with Ashton. CigarPage has deep ties to Oliva. CigarPage is owned by the family who started Cigarbid. IIRC, cigarbid and CI are owned by the same company.

Also Privada has put together a good family "tree" of who makes what. Compare the two lists and you can figure out which branch is in line with what you like.

I would strongly suggest subscribing to Holt's COTM in the next 48 hours so you can get the May selections. The Don Carlos Personal Reserve, VSG Sorcerer, My Father #5, Oliva Conn Reserve Churchill, and Machanudo Cafe Hyde Park are a steal (value of $80) at $35. Each month's selections go out on the second Friday if the month.

Corona Cigar, Holts, CigarPage, Neptune, and Small Batch send solid cigars. Do comparison shipping though. Holt's sales aren't really sales... they're advertisements of what their normal prices are. Corona is great when they run 20% off $150+. Their singles prices skew a bit high though. If you're going to spend $500+, wait for a 20% sale to buy your boxes. They'll be offering it Father's Day weekend and July 4th. (I had an issue with them but the resolution met my expectations.)

So Corona "gets it". They mailed it out Tuesday night via Priority Express and I received it last night with a nice note. Before receiving it yesterday I received an email obviously written without AI and full transparency with the multiple issues. I put the box into a Boveda Bag and an going to let it hang out for a few months.

I'm placing another order with them for one of the two new My Father "Father's Day" samplers. One has a selection of 8 sticks (2 each: Le Bijou 1922 Torpedo, Flor de las Antillas Toro, La Opulencia, The Judge Grand Robusto), an ashtray, lighter, and cutter. The other contains 10 sticks and comes with a small humidor.
We're waiting on a 300k dispersement from the estate of my wife's aunt. The house sold fast but there's a lot of stocks to cash out.

We're going back and forth on using money to renovate our house or moving to a smaller house and selling our current one "as is". Also making sure the kids have a nice car and getting me the pickup truck I want (she drives a company car).
My cousin used to teach wood shop in the classroom from the movie. Very little had changed in the 20 years post-filming. Unfortunately for him he wasn't a fan of the movie.

Back in '96 my fraternity had an entire semester where we alternated between this and Braveheart every night. At one point most of us had the scripts committed to memory.

Was anybody else watched the first three episodes so far? It’s been ok but I have seen better. I am wondering how they how they are gonna do 20 parts for this. They are already on the siege of Britain by episode 2.
I learned one thing from those three hours... the Molatov visit to Germany. I hated how they skipped around. They went through the invasion of Poland and then backtracked to cover the treaty between Stalin and Hitler. Monday is Pearl Harbor. After promoting the series as stressing things not covered in decades, they're blowing past the embargo and diplomacy. E04 should be about the build up to Pearl Harbor with E05 covering new ground (the Japs missing the carriers/the breakdown of communication at the top of the DOW/the sailors who just spent all night with the ladies).

If E04-06 are a repeat of E01-03, all of the build up to this was complete bullshite. Just the same stories with a famous movie star narrating. The EP credits on this makes Jon Meacham an absolute joke of an unbiased "historian".

re: Jobs You Had as a Kid

City jobs in high school...
Softball and Basketball scorekeeper
Emergency baseball umpire
Playground Leader

Then I was a summer honors counselor after my freshman year in college.

Today’s creature comforts would include a much larger list and no generation will accept living at a lower financial life style than what they had growing up.
First thank you for the well thought out post that actually makes a good point. All 4 of my grandparents were old enough to remember the depression. My parents were born in the early 50s, I'm a young Gen X, and my wife is a bit younger and falls in the Xennial subset. I have one kid who is in the very young millennial group and another at the start of Gen Z...so this has always been an interesting discussion for me.

My paternal grandparents worked hard and thanks to public sector jobs, knowing the importance of saving, and living within their means their retirement was quite comfortable. My maternal grandparents were unique. My grandfather ran a century old farm first settled by his great grandparents, was a successful politician, and played a part in the construction of the only interstate road in the county. Unfortunately he died at 53 which meant my grandmother had to go from being a housewife to working a desk job.

My parents were the first generation not to work a day in the public sector. They didn't take the lessons from their parents, divorced, and I grew up in a worse economic household than they did. (As an aside, my wife grew up living in a crudely constructed apartment inside of a former gas station.)

My dad's parents always imparted on me the value of getting a college degree (I'm the first on that side of the family) and I was lucky enough to have gone to college before costs exploded. My wife got out of extreme poverty through her full athletic scholarship (she should star in those NCAA ads). When we left our homes neither one of us had anything to fall back on with our parents.

Fast forward 25 years. We live fairly comfortably in a house we paid off without any help. My dad is living in the house where he grew up. As a result of me being an only child, each of my kids will inherit a paid off house. My grandkids will be the first to be affected by the rise of housing costs.

People like to criticize/blame those who have succeeded trough hard work and financial discipline. Those who go through life blaming others for their own shortcomings do not deserve any sympathy. That does not mean that college, gas, food, and housing costs aren't out of control. They are. But that isn't the fault of Boomers in general. That blame is misplaced and should be placed on the boomers in DC. Unfortunately you have hypocritical self centered idiots like Jill Filipovic who live to blame an entire generation for their own inadequacies.
The History Channel. Tom Hanks is narrating it. Pretty solid so far. Not a lot of new ground covered but a lot of footage that I haven't seen before as well as different experts. Dan Carlin was the first one on screen.
I'm watching the WW2 series premiere. SNME's backstage:wrestling formula is something they should be using on RAW.

That’s crazy to order a box and get a single. If they won’t reply to you, I’d get my credit card company involved.
I finally received an AI generated response. Basically it claimed they have to go through their inventory to see if there's a discrepancy. A further reply calling them out for AI generated a human response. I sent pictures showing there's no way the box could have been shipped using the shipping box they used. I didn't realize until today that all they should've needed was to look at the UPS shipment details (which showed it weighing only 1.8lb). It appears that they are trying to meet my expected timeline (the box on my hands by noon on Wednesday) so we'll see how this plays out tomorrow. I can't even go relax with a cigar thanks to my allergies kicking up.

ETA: They finally sent it today via Priority Express.

re: Parents Buying Kids Homes

We have 2 kids. I am an only child. My dad has a house 6 hours from here and we also have a house that's paid off. In the end, both kids will have a house (or a nice down-payment if they want a different house) free and clear. It's about the only blessing in being an only GenX child. (No debts either thanks to my wife's wealthy aunt dying with no living children.) Also a few hundred thousand worth of land that has been passed down since the 19th century.

I feel for kids that are leaving college now with $250k of student loans and who don't have any hope of similar inheritances.

World War 2 by Tom Hanks starts Sunday on History channel, first three episodes
will be 20 total episodes
I'm cautiously optimistic that this will be good. One of the things mentioned in the preview I read was about the oil embargo. It does have Tom Hanks behind it who's been fairly viewpoint neutral. Tom Hanks is left of center though. On the small chance that he uses the embargo to frame Pearl Harbor as "we deserved it" I'm done with him and the channel. I really hope he keeps his reputation intact. This could be an epic series not seen since "The World At War".

ETA: 20 minutes in and they've covered nothing that I didn't learn in HS.

ETA 2: They say they're going to cover things not covered before yet no mention of the NAZI pact with Stalin while covering the invasion of Poland???

Have any of you ordered a box but were sent a single? I was looking forward to trying a stick and adding the rest. Instead I have a $240 stick that's pissing me off every time I look at it.

With their lack of a response Corona Cigar Company has lost a long time customer. Third straight order that they've screwed up and then shrugged their shoulders. Stay away!
They need to start sterilizing these people before they're allowed to pollute the world with their spawn.

Ah so it was one of the six that malfunctioned. Gotcha.
Correct, one of the big three. I do wonder how quickly they can investigate, make adjustments, and roll it out to the launch pad. I think late 2027 was the target for A3 if everything went perfect between A2 and then. SpaceX will have to dedicate more resources to SS tweaks now, so does this push A3 back to early 2028? Or they are willing to do A3 without a turnkey lander from both contractors?

I don't think there was a retrieval ship, that was drone footage.

They sink them currently.
Yep, I was wrong. I'm surprised some climate nutjob hasn't sued/made a big deal with the media over the amount of materials we dump into the ocean. With the extra propellant perhaps they could've (should've?) sent it into the earth's Pacific space dump instead of of the coast of NW Australia/S Indonesia. I'm not making an argument against today's outcome but I could see Greta and her simps pulling a stunt that puts them inside an exclusion area during future missions.

I must have misheard that bit then. It certainly explains why the room was going nuts while it was blowing up.

Amazon hates me for this. Their chat bots get pissed when I call them or for not being a real person. I hate liars so it usually escalates quickly. I have an echo alarm clock, my wife and I are constantly trying to find Alexa's boundaries.
