re: Basketball Recruiting Thread

Not sure who has had a bigger impact on recruiting for MIZ thus far, Cuonzo or Porter Jr.

I think Porter Jr simply being at MU has made MU a desired target for any uncommitted high level recruits in the area. Then again, Cuonzo is a big reason Porter is here to begin with (along with Romar getting fired in Wash).

Either way, it's been an awesome snowball effect and I'm very optimistic that the tag teaming they're doing this year will pay dividends for Cuonzo and Mizzou for years to come, especially in the St. Louis --> Columbia pipeline.

I'm not trying to "sell something else." I think you need to read the phrase "lane violation" as swerving in/out of his lane which is exactly what police would be looking for at 2 am by drivers who have been drinking. Nothing bull shite about it. Middle of the day with lots of other traffic around, Probably a different story. Likely just some moron on their phone. Middle of the night, probably someone on their way home from a bar or party who's been drinking.

This is still just a minor thing in my book that requires a talk and a slap on the wrist from coach. It's unfortunate it gets the press it does. Luckily he wasn't above the DUI limit. That would be much more serious.

I'm disappointed to read a racial profiling comment tied to this story. I'm crazy excited about MU hoops this year, but police can't ignore a MIP. I'm sure lots of kids got them the same weekend (of multiple races), but since they're not headline D1 athletes, they won't make the front page.

As for Tillmon, he made a simple mistake. I was in college once (and High School for that matter), and like almost everyone else I knew, I wasn't waiting until I was 21 to drink beer. So I'm not going to say he's a bad kid. He just took a gamble with a bad decision like everyone else does and got caught. It wasn't the cops fault. They're just doing their job. If they had given a white frat kid a MIP and ignored Tillmon, we'd get bad press for that too as MU's athletes being allowed to circumvent the law.

Hopefully after this he realizes that he has more at stake than the average MU student and is smarter about his decisions. I also hope Cuonzo mentors him about this and he can move on as a learning experience.

I hate to say he should just get the proverbial slap on the wrist, but I think that's about all that's warranted here, along with a serious conversation about him representing MU better in the future.
Assuming our last scholarship is waiting for Jontay, This is as good of a pick up as we could possibly get for a walk on. I thought the only news left to hear about MU hoops recruiting this year would be the news of Jontay reclassifying, so this was a nice bonus to read about.
I remember following Ronnie a little bit years ago. He's got game. Just to have that kind of quality walk on for inter squad scrimmages will be a big plus.
Awesome! Sounds like a great guy. Love it when a kid stays humble with that much talent. Those are the kids you want at your program.

I think we've got a lot of those this year, starting with MPJ.

Now waiting for Jontay...

And 58.7 pts a game her senior year in HS! Crazy basketball blood in that family.

Mizzou fan here. Been lurking on this forum ever since Cuonzo was hired and Romar was fired. First time posting.

Can't believe how the cards have been dealt for MU hoops this year. I haven't been this excited for Mizzou basketball in years.

Kemp leaving was probably a formality once it was a sure thing that Tilmon was coming and Jontay was still contemplating.

As for Jontay reclassifying, I honestly feel very good either way. He comes this year, we have a chance to have one unbelievable season. In addition to being an elite player, he and MPJ playing together since childhood will be a huge bonus in helping the new team gel.

If he comes the following year, there's a slight chance (at least I hope) that MPJ decides to stick around for an extra year. I think that would be the absolute best situation for Mizzou long term. It gives us at least one top recruit for a second year in a row which could help start a trend for MU, and obviously we get to keep MPJ another year. But realizing that's probably a pipe dream (MPJ staying an extra year), I'll welcome Jontay whenever he wants to come.

BTW, I think I read that he was about 55-45 on reclassifying a while back, but now is back to 50-50. He said he isn't going to decide until after his Mokan team plays in the Nike Peach Jam tourney in mid July.

I think when it is all said and done, MPJ could be the most talented player MU has ever had. But as a (likely) multi-year player, Jontay could be the Porter that leaves the biggest legacy at MU.

Of course, I haven't seen any of the younger Porters yet. Let's hope the name Porter becomes synonymous with MU hoops for a long, long time. :dude:
