re: How did the SEC get this bad?

Meyer was a Mountain West coach, Spurrier and Richt were groomed into excellence in the ACC, and Miles was a Big 12 coach.

The SEC's returning to its pre-2006 form it seems. Honestly, in any conference's peak years, it's not dominant from top to bottom.
The Big Ten is returning to its former 90s glory right now.

OU is overrated and Baker Mayfield kinda sucks, but Auburn is mediocre this year and not as good as "8-4". I'll take Oklahoma by a FG.

1. Michigan- They always talk like they've never lost a game in the history of college football.
2. USC- See Michigan
3. LSU- Always think they're way better than they are. 2011 team wasn't "unstoppable" it was an offensive midget.
4. Oklahoma- Always talk about national titles even though Stoops can't even recruit defense anymore hence the 150lb speed corners playing LB.
5. Alabama- Always overhype their QBs even though the QBs usually suck.

Miami had pure speed and chemistry though. They were actually identical to the 2012 Alabama team imo. Run heavy offense with a star WR and some speedy slot guys and then the defense ball hawked, dominated the d-line, and put crushing hits on opponents making it hard for them to pick up a single first down, let alone establish a drive.
The BC game, I remember that one distinctly. Boston College was pretty good and executed a perfect defensive game plan to contain Portis and make Dorsey win the game, and Dorsey had an awful day. It was like the SEC Championship Game for '12 Alabama against Georgia kinda.
To shut down 2001 Miami or 2012 Alabama, you had to mix up the perfect plays defensively to stop the running game and leave yourself at risk of getting burned by the mega WRs like Johnson or Cooper or the speedy slot guys on slants, and then you had to find a way to somehow move the ball on offense without getting turned over. I dunno, those two teams are clearcut the best I've ever seen. I think there's a gap between '01 Miami and '12 Alabama and the rest.

Good on Dabo. Watson is the best QB Clemson's had.

Lmao he was third string at Clemson? Didn't even know that. Well there's nothing about him that strikes me as an NFL QB. At least with Trubisky and Watson I see throws that make me go  and say, "All right. These guys can ball."
Watson is kinda skinny for an NFL QB though. Bigger scramblers than Watson get hurt for those dual-threat antics in the pros.

His coach at Arkansas was a complete moron to bench him. You have the #1 QB recruit in America coming to frickin Arkansas and you BENCH him in favor of some 2 star scrubbed named Dick Jones or whatever his name was? Total fool. It proved that the real reason for the benching must have been personal because nobody subs in Brett Hundley for Aaron Rodgers in Madden.
re: 'The culture is a disaster:' Jones, Vols trending the wrong way

Ummmmm... The way Tennessee is trending, they're one QB and a playmaker or two away from winning the SEC.

I don't buy Towles's stats either. Kentucky and BC are bad teams. I haven't watched him at all this year, but I recall him being either beastly or wildly erratic with UK.
Can't say I completely buy Trubisky given the favorable offense he plays in, but you can see all the passing talent is there.

Towles has all the physical tools to make it happen. I remember watching a few Kentucky games where he was benched or came off the bench. If I were the Kentucky coach, he'd be my four year starter easily even if he goes through bad stretches. Confident BC will win its bowl game behind him.
Why all the hype for Chad Kelly?

He's really not that good.
Not to show any ACC bias, but I think Trubisky and Watson are the best college QBs. Browning only looks good because Washington's o-line and running game was so much better than most of the Pac-12's defenses that he had a lot of moments to shine, and Kelly doesn't impress me at all.
TBH, I don't think any QB coming out of college this year is gonna be good in the NFL. If it happens, I think it'll be some late round gem like Seth Russell from Baylor or former UK QB Patrick Towles.

That transitive property argument haha. I think 2004 USC was a better team than the hyped up '05 team because Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson were beasts on the D line. That's one common factor that the all-time teams share- beastly offensive and defensive lines. It matters because you eventually have to play an elite team that can rip off 5, 6, 7 yards per carry if you don't have a monster D-line.

Well the way he plays the QB position is pretty offensive...
re: Best teams to not win Natty title

I've heard a lot of old heads say 1994 Penn State and claim it was the best offense ever in an era when the Big Ten was the best conference in the nation, but I would say my top 5 of teams I remember would be:
1. 2005 USC
2. 1998 Ohio State
3. 2002 Miami
4. 2008 USC
5. 2003 USC
1. 2005 USC
2. 1998 Ohio State
3. 2002 Miami
4. 2008 USC
5. 2003 USC
Is this year's playoff even gonna be dramatic?

I feel that Alabama, while lead by a sucky QB, and while Washington might play them to a single-digit loss, shouldn't really lose.
I would say Ohio State is the best bet to beat them, but J.T. Barrett will probably suck it up with the spotlight on. There's something wrong with Ohio State. It's like a good song that can't ascend to the top of the charts. Clemson is fake and full of holes.

I've heard the '95 Nebraska team was dominant. That was a little before I started following CFB though.
That '99 Nebraska team was superb. I remember they almost jumped Virginia Tech in the BCS even though they had a loss because VT played in the weak east and the Big 12 was a powerful conference. Yeah, that would have been a great title game. FSU vs. Huskers

Yeah 2004 was definitely the best Auburn team I've ever seen. Think they could have taken USC to the brink possibly.
The 2013 team was a Cinderella and the 2010 team was like last year's Villanova basketball team. They may have won, but every hardcore fan knows there were four or five teams that could have smacked them around.

2011 Oklahoma State would have certainly lost to LSU. Team was beyond soft. LSU was a better and faster version of Stanford that season.
And Texas Tech would never beat any of Saban's good Alabama teams haha. TTU would get punished on the lines, even those years when they get big offensive lines, those guys are so unathletic. Bama brings in the linemen who punish you. :banghead:
