re: Breaking Down the LSU @ Mississippi State Game
Posted by JDax on 8/31/15 at 11:00 am
I just like the fact that State beats LSU for the first time since '99 last season, and all of a sudden think they own this series.
No one owns a series in the SEC like LSU has owned Mississippi State. State has only won 4 games against LSU since 1985.
As far as this year's game, I think it will be close for 3 quarters, and LSU pulls away in 4th and wins by 10....

DELUSIONS
It's not out and out "fixing" per se, so you don't need to keep anyone quiet. It's more like gambling at a casino, you can win, but the house has the game set up to give them an inherent advantage. In order to win you must overcome that advantage... In the case of SEC football, especially if it's Tom Ritter's crew, the "house" is Alabama. You have to be 2 scores better, because if it's close the house will get paid.

Let's look the most agregous of all the questionable calls...
(The situation: LSU recovers a Bama fumble at the Bama 6 yard line, with 1:06 to play in a 10-10 game. LSU runs the ball for a 1 yard gain on 1st down, in the ensuing scrum, some pushing and shoving occurs by both teams. LSU is flagged for a dead ball Personal Foul, which gives LSU a 2nd and goal from the Bama 20.)
The crux of my point is as follows: You can not call a dead ball subjective penalty like a personal foul at that juncture in the game. If anything, the referees (if they are trying to send a message to get the pushing and shoving under control) has to call that penalty off setting (on both teams) or keep the flag in his pocket and do it verbally while breaking up the scrum.
Although there were many officiating decisions through the course of the game that were questionable from an LSU standpoint, I take less exception with the lack of PI calls and other non-calls because the Referees were allowing both teams a lot of latitude in that department ("letting them play").
Regardless of what team you support, you should never want an officiating crew to interject themselves and make judgement call that fundamentally alters the complexion of the game in a dead ball situation. This is exactly what happened last night.
I don't know if LSU scores a touchdown (if the Personal Foul isn't called) with a 2nd & 3rd and goal from the Bama 5 yard line. But what I do know, is that Miles has no other choice other than play for a FG once the penalty is called, hence changing the complexion of the course of the game. This is just flat wrong.
I realize that this is a nuanced point, and will go over the heads of 90% of the Alabama fan base. However this moment, this call, this type of imposition in the complexion of the game, is a microcosm of everything that wrong with Alabama and the SEC's complacent bias towards them.
While it is true that the outcome of the game (A LSU loss in Overtime), may not have changed, however the fact that this type of heavy handed favorable officiating oversight benefits Alabama more than any other team in the SEC is troublesome (This type of favorable call is not an anomaly as it relates to Bama).
This one call isn't the reason that LSU lost (Lack of competent QB play, Special Teams lapses, and inability to finish games all contributed), however it could be construed that this questionable call is the reason that Bama won. That isn't good long term for the SEC or College Football as a whole, and only serves to cheapen Alabama's accomplishments.
I have no doubt that vast majority of Bama's fan base is too delusional and too entitled to understand this, and that is why the majority of everyone else hates Alabama.

It's quite possible this is the last tiger - and no doubt it would be if we start freaking him out by forcing him to get into a tiny cage and paraded around 100,000 screaming drunk Cajuns.
It's not easy getting tigers anymore, you don't just call up the Nairobi Walmart and order one.
He's a 500 pound wild apex predator, for chrissakes, he's pretty much going to do what he wants to do.
There are more Tigers held in captivity in the state of Texas alone than there are in the wild... We could get another Tiger if needed...

I've been saying this since it happened, I had a bad feeling going into the 1/9/12 game because of the way that rematches in college football always favor the team that lost the first game.
But the '12 Bama game is the one that hurts the most... Because after Landry scored to take the lead, for about 45 mins in real time the whole world was right (I was there and you couldn't hear the person next to you... And then we got Chavis'd, they were who we thought they were and we let them off the hook. Miles had a better team that night and didn't know it...
Yep that one will hurt for a long time...

Don't see that happening. More likely to add North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Then move Kentucky and Vandy?
Not sure UNC would come without Duke... In a perfect world it would be Oklahoma and UNC. But my point is that regardless who the additional schools would be, it would be harder to keep the 2 games that have to happen annually, unless all 4 of the schools (Bama, Auburn, UGA, and UT) are put in the same division.

No. Let's move Auburn to the East to balance the divisions and bring back old rivalries
If the SEC ever goes to 16 teams, they need to consider moving both Alabama and Auburn to the East to protect the 2 games that we have permanent cross division rivals for:
UGA/AU- Oldest rivalry in the Deep South
Ala/UT- The 3rd Saturday in October
Example (You add the Oklahoma schools):
West:
A&M
Arkansas
LSU
Miss
Miss St
Missouri
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St.
East:
Alabama
Auburn
UGA
UT
UK
Fla
USC
Vandy

LSU:
Bama- The Big Game with the most on the line in recent years (plus the Saban/Miles factor)
Ole Miss- My parent's generation would rank them #1
Auburn- That game is normally close, still pissed about '06 "Grand Theft Auburn"
UF
A&M

As far a shocking LSU get, I think that Adoree Jackson signs with LSU....

re: Most intense LSU game you've ever been to?

Away: Bama '11- Sitting in a Bama section and it was intense from start to finish. Greatest game of Defensive Football I ever saw. Had a playoff like feel, bc at the time it appeared the loser would be out of the discussion.
Home: Bama '12- You could feel walking in that we had at least a puncher's chance. Home Game/ Night Game. Just emotional from start to finish, Bama jumps out to 14-3 lead at the half. Mostly self inflicted by LSU, (Copeland's Personal Foul that lead to us settling for a FG & Piss Poor Defense at the end of the 1st Half)... You could feel it slipping away..
Then here came the Tigers, TD to make it 14-10, then a Onside Kick that we didn't need to run, went bad, the Defense forced a TO... The Jarvis Landry catching a TD to take the lead... For about 45 mins in real time the whole world was right, and it appeared that Miles was going to exorcise the Demons of 1/9... It felt like the faithful, were just trying to will it...
Then the missed FG, and you know what happened...
That one hurt me more than 1/9, bc I felt that we had the better team that night and for it to end like that was just a curel joke from the football gods... To quote Denny Green, "They were who we thought they were, and we let them off the hook". A part of me will never get over that one.
I have never been more mentally exhusted than after that 2012 Bama game, and don't think I ever will, because I will never care that much about a LSU game again. A small bit of my capasity to care, went down with the Tigers that night.
