re: IYO, is someone "self made" if their parents paid their way through school?

Nobody is completely self-made. It's a silly thing to obsess over. If you had parents that help you pay for school at all, you're already at an advantage compared to most people. There's no need to be ashamed of that, and it doesn't mean you shouldn't be proud of the things you worked for, but maybe just take a moment to reflect before you write off someone else whose experience in life was probably much different from yours as being a part of some imaginary "moocher class."

You're a day early. Today is February 30th.
Every day February 30th in Lake Charles!

We don't have a revenue problem...we have a spending problem in Louisiana.
So go ahead and move to one of the four states that pay less in taxes than we do. Mississippi is the closest, but Wyoming is the only one that's arguably a better place to live.

It was more of that the way King and the governor are saying things makes him as a tax payer feel like they are blaming him and the public for the mess
Basically stop pointing fingers and do what you were supposed to do all this time.
F. King Alexander cannot hold the legislature at gun point and force them to support a higher education institution that has already been substantially harmed by repeated, irresponsible budget cuts. All he can do is tell people the truth about what the worst case scenario that he has been told to develop a plan for would entail.
Hanny *usually* knows his stuff when it comes to football and baseball, but anyone that is more pissed off at the suggestion that budget cuts might affect football than the fact that budget cuts have and will seriously damage the ability of the states only public R1 institution has their priorities way out of line.
I have to say, when Jindal brought in F. King, I just assumed he was gonna be another stooge hired to do Jindals bidding. But in the end, he actually seemed to be more effective at standing up to Jindal than either Martin or Lombardi were. I don't have any complaints so far.

My orders to Higgins was to, ‘tone down’ his unprofessional comments on our weekly Crime Stoppers messages and had nothing to do with the Gremlins video that appeared on the networks. I agree with the Gremlins video. First of all; I repeatedly told him to stop saying things like, ‘you have no brain cells, or making comments that were totally disrespectful and demeaning. Second; Clay Higgins appeared on the cover of a local magazine in full dress uniform without my approval and permission. That too is something he didn’t like me controlling.”
As Sheriff, it is my duty and responsibility that the message going out to the public be professional, on point and truthful. The public needs to remember the department public information officer is a spokesperson for the sheriff and represents the sheriff’s words, thoughts and message. If Clay Higgins cannot agree with my words, thoughts and message, then he is correct in resigning his position.
Sounds downright reasonable. It's a shame that he'll probably fail to get reelected because all of the St. Landry man-children will be pissed that they can't watch a uniformed police officer call people stupid. I'm sure there are a lot of tear stained affliction shirts tonight.

I can't believe he actually resigned because the sheriff asked him to take it down in a notch in his little videos. And his speech was so self-righteous. You're supposed to be a professional, man, not a viral video star.
I can only guess he must be getting a big cut of the coin from selling those tshirts, because this is a silly thing to resign over.

Because our sewage isn't radioactive.

Obama will nominate, but it will be a meaningless gesture. The Senate will certainly reject no matter who it is. They won't let him tip the court further left with less than a year left in his term.
There are 44 democrats in the senate plus 2 independents that caucus with the dems. It's pretty safe to say that's 46 votes locked down.
There are 3 republican senators in office that have previously crossed party lines to approve a supreme court nomination. It's like 1 or 2 will again.
There are also several republican senators seeking reelection in blue states this year. Not at all unreasonable to think at least 1 or 2 of them might fear being viewed as obstructionist and end up giving Obama the full 50 votes that he needs. I'd say the odds are at least slightly in Obama's favor here, with one caveat...
The republicans could filibuster. I think it's damn near impossible to imaging that Obama could sway enough republicans to get across the 60 vote mark needed to stop a filibuster. BUT, filibustering a supreme court nomination is unprecedented. This move would play right into the already prevalent idea that republicans are obstructionist. I think this would be a dumb move, probably seal a democratic victory in the election, and basically guarantee that Hillary or Bernie would get to solidify a liberal majority on the court for years to come once the next old timer on the court passes.
