re: How many people you think are on anxiety or ADD meds?
Posted by FrancisFromScottLA on 12/18/24 at 8:45 am
I think most people on this site assume that anxiety is just someone that is nervous or constantly worrying. Although that may be the case for some, actual anxiety disorder can manifest in different ways. Simply exercising, eating better and sleeping more can help but isn’t in of itself a cure for the disorder in a lot of instances. People assume someone can just “man up” and white knuckle through it but that’s not an option for a lot. Or at least not a realistic option.
I know for me and others that SSRIs have been a huge help when it comes to anxiety. I didn’t understand why it was happening (looking back it was a slow build that came to a tipping point) and at first, didn’t know that it was anxiety disorder. I had physical symptoms and felt sick/depressed to the extent that I couldn’t work or even walk down the street without issues. I wasn’t in position to just “remove/reduce stressors” in my life immediately (still not) and without SSRIs, I’m not sure if I’d be able to participate in society like I’d want.
I don’t plan to stay on them forever but to act like that type of medication isn’t helpful or is something shameful is either faux masculinity or a misinformed opinion.
This thread also talks about younger people being overly medicated. Society has changed and things like social media and other things indisputably subject the younger generation to higher risk of these issues. Instead of discounting things that help symptoms, the complaints should be focused on the root cause of why young people are having the issues. I know for me that removing social media (especially reels) helped some.
All that to say that things are different today for young people and to base assumptions off your own/different experience is why there are often disconnects or misinformed opinions.
TLDR SSRIs can be a huge help for anxiety and was for me.

many in today’s society act as judge and executioner without going through a reasoned fact finding process.
Do you need more than the video to make a personal assessment/judgment of whether his actions were appropriate and/or justified?
You have to address the root cause and the symptoms of an issue. Neglecting the root cause leads to the same problem over and over (like thinking merely locking up criminals will change things/reduce crime) and neglecting symptoms of an issue exasperates the issue and potentially turns the symptom into it's own problem (like refusing to prosecute criminals).
You can be sympathetic for Suarez based on your own experience while calling his actions for what they were.
Refusing to do the latter based on some unknown hope of other facts theory doesn't do him or anyone any good. The whole tone of the article suggests that he thinks he has no accountability in this--which should be telling. That said, the real disservice is reading a nola.com article.
re: What was your best Christmas gift ever?
Posted by FrancisFromScottLA on 12/20/21 at 10:33 am
Tickets to the 2000 Peach Bowl.
It was my first year going to all of the home games (that I can remember). We rushed the field for Tennessee, Mississippi State, and Alabama, and it felt like we were going to the Bourbon Bowl with Nick after suffering through '98 and '99. I vividly remember being told that we couldn't get tickets to the bowl game and waking up Christmas morning to find them on the tree. Best present to this day.
Peach Bowl/SECCG fan experience in the early 00s was unmatched.

Gotta give it to the churches and Mississippi casinos; their tactics are working with some. ?
Again, there's plenty of legitimate arguments to make in opposition and the same for voting yes--but Mandeville lakefront fear/hysteria isn't one of them.
It will be interesting to see the impact of the SoS pushing back elections because of Hurricane Ida. At this point, it looks like it was premature. I know the "No" people are praying for a low turnout--only want some voices heard.

You severely underestimate the regulatory side and what it takes to put a casino anywhere in Louisiana, among other things.
Gaming has been legal for decades in Louisiana--including parishes that have attractive real estate. In your memory, how many casinos have been developed on premium real estate, much less against the will of the locale?
Of course there are some big money interests that would love to put a casino on the Mandeville lakefront. I'd also like to win the lottery and retire. Just because you can theorize in it your head doesn't make it realistic or actually relevant to whether St. Tammany should vote yes or no.

Because it’s not just for Slidell. If it passes, then a casino can build in any part of St Tammany parish. Meaning they are eyeing the Mandeville lakefront.

I don't feel strongly one way or the other but this is misinformation directly from the opposition. It's classic misdirection in an attempt to "scare" voters with hypotheticals that are not remotely realistic--"don't vote for one because there might be two."
The people pushing this narrative would rather the money stay in offering plates or in Mississippi. That should be telling.
And before someone tells their fellow citizen what they can and can't do, they at least owe them an honest conversation about the pros and cons of proposition. I understand some social/religious reservations, but Slidell doesn't get many opportunities like this.
There are obviously competing interests on both sides that are irrespective of what's "good" for St. Tammany but this theoretical nonsense doesn't further any legitimate discussion.

So underutilized this season. One of my big complaints was not lining up in the I formation with three tight ends in a true goal line formation more this season. Could have beaten Mizzou imo had we tried it.
This is some dumb sh*t. You should check out the depth chart before asking to trot out 3 TEs in any game or situation this year.
Would love to hear your other biggest complaints from the season.

re: Evidently, saying that a "culture of poverty" keeps people poor is racist.

Well, your premise may actually be racist.
Your thread title says:
Then your thread provides that you're triggered for being called racist because you:
Your argument seems racist because it hinges on "poor inner-city black people", as opposed to poor inner-city people. If you truly believed in the argument, it wouldn't matter if the poor inner-city person was black or white. Or do you believe that only black inner-city poor people are victim to this cyclical behavior because they are black?
Nonetheless, the options are that you are either 1) a racist or 2) sloppy with your argument/words.
Your call.

O's Use of Bye Week
Posted by FrancisFromScottLA on 11/5/17 at 7:58 pm
For the first time since we started putting our bye week before the Bama game, it seemed like we made better use of the extra time than Saban. We didn't get beat last night because we were outcoached.
I'm no O homer, but you have to give credit where credit is due. O and the staff got the guys ready to play, and we had a better game plan than Bama. Obviously, we could've had some better QB play and could've covered Ridley better, but our coaching staff put our guys in a position to succeed. We weren't just playing to hold onto the game or try to get lucky, we were competing. Whenever Bama had something positive going, it was because Hurts or Ridley were making plays or we were shooting ourselves in the foot like with the interception. It wasn't because Bama was better prepared or had a better play calling. We had a winning game plan in place, and think we weren't too far off from getting the W last night.
Not many times in the last 6 years has LSU gotten better at their weakness or fixed things with the team midseason. Good coaches make changes and fix problems. O has seemingly fixed the penalty problem, improved special teams, improved our play in the trenches, improved our run D, and has allowed the offense to be more creative.
I know ESPN and this board likes to paint O as a wholly inept head coach who can't even tie his shoes, but O deserves some credit for the way the team has responded/improved since Troy.

Yeah it's great if you love food from Sysco and gumbo/etouffee from a bag.
That said, lunch/dinner specials usually way to go there. Those are the few things they serve that aren't delivered frozen from sysco or precooked somewhere off location at a mass kitchen.
Sammy's, Mike Andersons, Chimes, and most local BR fall victim to buying tons of precooked or serving offsite prepared food. It's good for the bottom line but is the reason why there aren't very many "great" restaurants in BR.

I think the 2013 team stunk up Omaha much worse, primarily because they had much more pure talent than this team.
You kidding me? Pure talent?
I've never understood when people said this year's team wasn't talented. We had 3 solid starters and a 3 deep bullpen. We were the best fielding team in the nation and had over half of our lineup bat over .300 (total team average of .289).
It doesn't take MLB qualities to be talented at the college level. You guys have no f**king clue.
Outside of maybe OSU, we did not face a team this postseason that was more talented than our roster. If you're waiting for a more "talented" roster, you will be waiting for a while. At the end of the day, this team made too many mistakes at the CWS and had some guys slump at the wrong time.
If you're basing talent off of guys who make MLB rosters, then you're an idiot. We can go through a lot of talented guys who have come through lsu that have not made it to the MLB.
Piped in Music....
Posted by FrancisFromScottLA on 4/29/17 at 5:06 pm
The piped in music the LSU Bama game is awful. I understand the traditional ballpark organ and walk-up songs, but this is ridiculous. It's more obnoxious than their football stadium minus scott cochran.
I still don't see how the administration and its lackeys like Gordy Rush see piped in music at LSU as something to enhance the in-game experience for football or any sport.
We have a great band. If the crowd or band isn't loud enough, we shouldn't stoop to state, bama and ole miss levels. If this movement makes it to LSU baseball games, god help us all.

Had a similar experience as the OP recently. I rarely go there now. Normally just for nostalgia when old friends come back in town or after a late night. It's poorly run and the waiters that used to hold the place together are no longer there.
Subpar experiences are common if you go at lunch or in the afternoon. But then again, it's on you if you're eating Pluckers when the sun is still up.
RIP onion rings.
