re: Is the LSU course unplayable currently?

Just returned from a round. It’s still in rough shape. It’s not all terrible and given the degree of support they’ve been given in recent years, I’m just glad it’s open. Still a grass range for cheap. And they have new cups! So the flags sit nice and firmly in there. Something!

This will be a long 7 innings.

Hoping he has an Aaron Anderson-esque LSU year 2. Because I think he's had his chances this year.

Was curious if anyone has played this track semi-recently. I’m in that area occasionally and it seems like it was pretty nice at one time, but I can’t find any recent review or accounts and that have no social media presence.

I was unaware that Fennwood was open to the public now. I played once after winner a round as a door prize. It was later in the year so not the best conditions. And the layout was kind of confusing as I recall. But I would play again for sure.

This was my problem too. They spun great, flew far, but the cover would tear so easily. Perhaps I'll give them another try.
I've been using Wilson Triads all summer and I love them for something semi-premium but not ProV1 tier.

Please report back on your experience. That's a price I can live with if he knows hist stuff. What's your current handicap/average score?
re: Green Conditions at BREC Courses

Played Santa Maria yesterday. Was about a 4 hour round, but we lucked out and had nobody in front of our foursome. Behind us was a foursome that kept good pace, then a sixsome of jackasses that were group celebrating OB tee shots, and a foursome that was probably having an absolutely miserable time in the heat waiting for those goons.
Course was in decent shape. Greens had a lot less poa sprouting on them than when I last played in....early May? Late April? Only hole 11 was particularly bad because was covered in sand.
Apparently Mike Johnson is working out of Webb now? Maybe that's a good sign for things to come there... Would love to have him back or someone up to the task out at LSU.
I wish Webb's little hitting bays had some sort of launch monitor situation. Aside from a warmup, I can't gauge anything from hitting into a net.
Also while I'm ranting about BREC, I got a nice BREC gift card for father's day that I CAN'T use with online Pre-Pay which saves a ton of money over time. They need to sort that out pronto.

re: #7 green at City Park in BR

The #7 green is very frustrating. I've hit some of my best drives into this hole recently but I'm consistently 3 putting my putts that, literally, break 3-4 times.
But really, other than that I've been happy with City Park. I can play 9 holes for $8 walking during the week and get just enough of a workout without being useless. I do not want to see the price triple, but they can definitely sort #7 out.

Take it from someone who plays this course entirely too much. Those are far and away the best greens on the course. Get to hole 7 and question everything you know about what a "green" is.
LSU is great as a slump buster. Course is quite open, and if you accept that putts aren't going to drop like they should, it can be a low stakes round to tune up your swing. But I would recommend any other course for a legitimate, entertaining round.
The best thing going for LSU is that I can hit a 7 dollar large bucket on grass. They have a chipping green (sort of) and they have a little 3 hole putting green. It's close to me, so I make that trip rather frequently when I don't have time for a round of golf.
Would love for it to get back into its old shape but I think we are witnessing the final decline. Then I'll be screwed for affordable driving range access.

I picked golf back up after a 5 year break. Putting was horrendous and convinced myself that I needed to make the move from blade to mallet, and that would fix everything.
90 days later, I'm very grateful that for the 90 day buy back guarantee for Callaway Golf Pre-owned. It's back to the Yes! Callie C-Groove until I can do a proper putter fitting. Anyone had a good one in the BR area recently?

re: What is your favorite cozy game?
Posted by Modest on 10/17/23 at 8:50 am
I have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours in Slay the Spire.
Once it came out on iOS it became a mainstay on my home screen. I'll put it down for a few weeks or a month and forget about it, then pick it up on a whim and find myself playing constantly for a few more weeks. Even if card based stuff is off putting (it is to me, largely), this is to me, the perfect cozy rogue-lite game where every run is different, the challenge continues to grow as you get better, and you can play at your pace. Seriously, if you have avoided the game up to this point, I can't recommend it enough.

I did a Callaway fitting and found the Paradym irons nice and effortless (and insanely hot. They go stupid far). I'm typically a Stiff, but I actually got fitted into TrueTemper Elevate 95 in Regular. It felt amazing. So light, and my ball flight was much higher. Spin rate too.

Yeah sorry if I implied that I’m a high handicapper. I have played since childhood but stopped after high school. So I’ve gotten back into it in a big way this season and I’ve got the bug bad, but I’m starting to feel limited by my very game improving irons and randomly acquired clubs from middle school/high school.
I didn’t even think to grab some of those clubs outside the bays. Wasn’t sure if that was kosher… They typically let me hit in the bay as long as I want post-lesson so I think I may just have my own little fitting session next time.

they fit you with pretty much the latest model of everything so maybe you could take the results and purchase a previous model to save some money
This is more of what I'm talking about. I fully intend to replace my 16+ year old bag. It's just that I'm not prepared to spend 5 grand to outfit it with all new stuff. Likely older models or lightly used from CPO or 2nd Swing and the like.
Jacob is my swing coach and it's great so far. Easy to work with, and I've broken 80 twice for the first time since I've seen him.
I've got 2 kids in daycare, which costs more than my mortgage, so maybe 5+ years down the line I will look to go fully modern, assuming my game is ready for that next caliber of club.
I also agree that wedge fitting would be nigh impossible there. That seems like an on the course type of thing. Luckily I have a decent idea of the grind/bounce I'm looking for on my wedges. It will primarily be Irons and woods
Thanks for sharing your experience

GolfTec has a fitting process
Have you even done a fitting through them?
I'm currently working my way through a 5 lesson pack and am hoping to do a fitting at the conclusion of those. But I know my budget for new clubs, and I am basically 99% sure I won't be able to spring for anything from them. I'm hoping they won't be pushy, and if I should be upfront about that before booking it. I just want a thorough experience to feel like I know what I need to be looking for.

Played Clark Saturday for the 3rd time in a month. It was crowded. Played 18 in about 3:45, which is slower than I'm used to, but given the number of people out there, not terrible. Greens look really nice, but are not fast and do not hold shots very well. But I'm OK with that, as they are leaps and bounds better than City or Webb. Talked to the manager out there, and he said the amount of play they've gotten has been overwhelming. They are trying to get more carts since they run out on a daily basis and have people with tee times waiting on carts. Hopefully they can maintain the conditions with the amount of play they are getting.
It's a shame too. First time I played it I walked a 3:00 tee time. I was nearly dead after 9. That course is NOT designed for walking with all those long stretches between certain holes. I sure hope they can keep the greens up, because the secret's out and the Greater BR area is turning to it over the usual suspects.
re: The Island course condition
Posted by Modest on 6/1/23 at 3:56 pm
Played a week ago. It's in pretty decent shape, although my perception of decent is really being morphed by the local publics currently. I've played The Island, LSU, and City Park in the last 2 weeks. LSU is somehow worse that I remembered a few years back, City Park is in very rough shape and you might as well pick up once you hit the greens. The Island was nice by comparison. actual fairways, grass on the greens. Tee boxes were indeed rock hard, but fine. I was going to try and squeeze Webb in but it seems to stay pretty busy. Has it gotten any better in the last couple of years?
