Not really. If it’s Hope, yes. But if it LSUS or SEU loses, then the if necessary game becomes the championship and the tie breaker rules determine who gets the bye to that game. Look at the text in bottom left portion of the bracket

My mind immediately goes to 1996 (I think). WM v Catholic BR in the semi’s. Catholic had Applewhite and Travis Minor. WM had Tommy Banks.
Minor returned the opening kick off for a score. No XP. Arledge defense shut them down and Banks went big10 style and grounded them out. 12-6 final if I remember correctly.

TJ is widespread because it is effective. Causing an increase on two fronts.

2. Some players/coaches view it as a get out of jail free card. Trade arm care for reps and game experience and hit the TJ reset button when it catches up to you.
I don’t endorse #2. it’s just my opinion on a contributing factor.
