re: Don't want Lane

I just found out that JAMES CREGG is on staff at Ole Miss.

Count me out too
I think that Elko would think long and hard about it, but he is in a great spot at TAM especially with the old SEC west being blown up.

Prob comes down to how close his ties to Penn and the east coast truely are.
You might be right but at the end of the day the market is the market. Coaches are worth what schools are willing to pay. Right now proven P5 coaches cost a lot.
Not a legit source by any means ..... but I have a friend who grew up with a former bama player that is on staff at an ACC school. The former bama player thinks he's going to get hired by Kiffin at Florida next year.

TIFWIW

He's spent his entire coaching career in the midwest he isn't coming.

Not only has he not adjusted to NIL, more importantly he's proven to be a CEO type coach who has struggled mightily to replace Venables and Tony Elliot. Both holding P4 head coaching gigs right now and are doing pretty well.
Won the big 12 title in year 2 I believe

He never made the playoff, won the conf or won 11 games at Florida so he doesn't qualify.

Analyzing P4 Coaching Hires Since 2018

Posted by 314stunna on 11/3/25 at 8:26 pm
First of all, someone else did a much better analysis than I not long ago, but couldn't find the thread. Please let me know if I missed any coaches!!

I went back and tried to list all the P4 coaching hires since 2018. Intended outcome is to measure what are the most successful paths to being a P4 HC based on their prior role.

Prior Roles:
P4 HC
G5 HC
P4 OC
P4 DC
Position Coach

Success Criteria achieved at their CURRENT/ most recent school:
CFP Playoff Appearance
Conf Title
11 Win Season

Qualified Coaches:
Ryan Day P4 OC
Steve Sarkisian P4 OC*
Ryan Day P4 OC
Dan Lanning P4 DC
Sonny Dykes G5 HC
Dave Aranda P4 DC
Lane Kiffin G5 HC
Eliah Drinkwitz G5 HC
Josh Heupel G5 HC
Marcus Freeman P4 DC
Chris Klieman G5 HC
Mario Cristobal P4 HC
Kenny Dillingham P4 OC
Curt Cignetti G5 HC
Ed Orgeron Position Coach

Summary Table of Prior Roles: * notates the coach has been a P4 HC prior to last role
G5 HC - 7 (Kiffin*, Drink, Heupel, Chris Klienman, Curt Cignetti, Mike Norvell, Sonny Dykes)
P4 DC - 3 (Dave Aranda, Marcus Freeman, Dan Lanning)
P4 HC - 2 (Mario Cristobal, Kalen Deboer)
P4 OC - (Ryan Day, Kenny Dillingham, Sark*)
Position Coach - 1 (Coach O)

I know that Klienman and Cig were not technically G5, but it represents proven head coaches from lower level schools having success. Let me know if I missed anyone!

This is a funny post

I heard today he's coming. I guess we'll just have to see...

You heard this all the way in Korea??

Keep us posted.
Disagree, the big 12 hasn't been a strong conf for a while. He hasn't won a conf title and he is 47-40 in the Big 12 since being at Iowa St.

He's a good coach no doubt, he's not the right fit for this job. Also, hes made it clear he doesn't want to leave the midwest.
Based on what?

Burrow had thrown for 2800 yards and 30 TDs by this point. Your boyfriend has 9 TDs and 1800 yards. Not to mention a loss.
I think this is true, but I don't think this is ALL about low quality coaches.

I think we are in the middle or backend of a generational shift in coaching. The Urbans, Sabans, even guys like Brian Kelly from the last generation are close to being done.

So we have this young, somewhat unproven group of coaches. Could be low quality due to NIL, recruiting schedules ect, but I think we're a year or two away from seeing the next great wave of college coaches. No clue who they will be tho.

First of all, I agree with you.

But here is the thing. Landry isn't wrong, what he is saying is accurate. The problem is how he's going about it in the public during press conferences. We don't need our dirty laundry aired out for the national media. That doesn't help.

I also don't agree with pushing Woodward out. He's a good AD. Ok he gave out some big contracts, give him some requirements and he'll find someone who fits. He has a proven track record of hiring winners (outside of our shitty basketball coach)

The last search was 4 years ago, the coaching landscape has changed a lot since then.

Plus that was mostly Woody, who we don't even know will be involved this time.
While I agree with a lot of what you have typed, you are missing why BK was fired.

BK was fired bc this is year 4 and we are regressing not only in season but year over year. We went all in on this year.

I've been watching LSU football for a long time (late 90s) that loss vs Texas AM in tiger stadium is one of the most embarassing losses I've ever witnessed.

Lastly, the outlook for next year is bleak. It's a total rebuild and we have no clue who will be the QB.
While I agree, I'm ok with a Def minded coach who's called plays and will continue to do so. They just need to speicalize on one side of the ball, no more CEO.

There are tons of recent examples of defensive coaches/ former d cords who have had a high level of success

Kirby Smart
Marcus Freeman
Dan Lanning

Jury Still Out... but looking good:

Mike Elko
Clark Lea
If Woody was making the hire.... maybe.

But I don't think the powers that be will allow a Jimbo type hire unless it's for dirt cheap and we miss on a few swings.
