Perhaps Biggest of Kelly's Mistakes
Posted by Tenntig on 11/2/25 at 7:58 pm
Just after Brian Kelly was named to the LSU job, a Notre Dame fan noticed my LSU cap and thanked LSU for taking Kelly off his hands. I asked him why he felt that way since Kelly had been quite successful the three previous seasons in South Bend. He said Kelly was arrogant and nobody liked him.
I recall Kelly bragged that by coming to LSU, he'd never had to get on a plane again to recruit. On his first day in Baton Rouge his schedule was to have some family photos taken while Nick Saban (the morning after winning the SEC title game) was in Shreveport for an in-hme visit with Kendrick Law. (Bama signed him). I've also read an episodes of assistant coaches handing a phone to Kelly asking him talk to an important prospect and having Kelly refuse, saying, "tell him to make an appointment." In fact, I don't recall a time in four years when I've read that Kelly was on a trip for an in-house visit with a key player. (I'm sure he must have).
But the most serious of his many mistakes may be his treatment of strength coach Tommy Moffitt. Moffitt helped make John Curtis High School a national powerhouse, joined an 8-4 University of Tennessee team that went 45-5 over the next four teams and won a national title, joined a 9-4 Miami team that went 22-2 the following two years and, of course, contributed to the LSU team that went to the national championship game four times and won three.
Now at Texas A&M, he helped take a team that was 8-5 in 2024 to 8-0 now. It must have been sweet revenge for Moffitt to watch his Aggies humiliate Kelly and lead to his firing.
Moffitt was the first LSU staffer fired by Kelly when he arrived and he was replace by three "Player Development" coaches. Several former LSU players said the LSU team is now "soft" and Matt Flynn, who led LSU to a national title, said Tommy Moffitt was the most respected member of the athletic department in the view of the players. After two decades with LSU, I don't know if Moffitt would consider returning after what Kelly did to him, but I hope whoever comes in as the next head coach will make every effort to get him back.

Frank Wilson is a tremendous asset to LSU because he was very successful as a High School coach in New Orleans and can recruit well there. However, as a college head coach he was 26-40 at McNeese and UT-San Antonio. I hope the next LSU head coach keeps him on.

LSU defeated seven TopTen teams during the 2019 championship season.
You are a real class act, DC.
Certainly not most but more than his share. Within a week of taking the Alabama job he flipped LSU commit Luther Davis and after that first season, LSU never outranked him in recruiting. He went on to take about two dozen players ranked among the ten best in the state. The problem with that is LSU did almost nothing in recruiting leading Alabama players to balance the scales. In fact, since Saban arrived there, LSU has landed just one top-ten Alabama player -- Kwon Alexander, who was ranked sixth in the state in 2012.

Emanuel Ruffin?
Jefferson was ranked 1,584 in the country, 203 among receivers and 65 in the state by 247Sports. The 247 Composite had him rated even lower, at about 2,400, 308 best receiver and 77 in the state. He played in only six games as a freshman with no receptions. He is owe the top-rate and highest paid NFL receiver. Quite an improvement.
re: Who's your favorite LSU football player that wasn't a 4 or 5 star player?

Mathieu was the most entertaining player but he was a four-star player -- ranked third to sixth in the state by 247 and Rivals.
Lose go Clemson.

Don't understand. LSU had a 4% chance but Alabama had "like" a 17% chance. What does that mean? If LSU had "like" a 4% chance and Alabama had a real 17% chance, which is better?
re: What was your honest first thought when you saw Burrow going off on UCF?

That was the game that gave me confidence that LSU would be outstanding in 2019. When Burrow got off the ground after that hit on the interception and led LSU back for the win, I knew this team could be special. After the game, my nephew predicted a national championship the next year and he was right on target. LSU defeated seven teams ranked in the Top 10 in 2019 and no other team comes close to that. GOAT
What is the reason for starting a sentence with, "I mean...?"
Holy Cow! How arrogant is this girl? She is one of the highest NIL earner regardless of sex and she has done very little if anything for the LSU gymnastics team. Pay her for the points she has scored in the SEC and NCAA championships. That comes to zero. She probably not among the best 10 on the team and she's complaining about making far more than any of her teammates.
Ninety-two down votes? Don't say anything negative about LSU's performance. These children are easily offended.
Amusing but far-fetched. Last season former LSU wide receivers Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, Brian Thomas and Malik Nabors ranked first, second, third and sixth in total receiving yards in the NFL. Chase won the 'triple crown" in leading the league in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Former Tigers such as Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry each led the league in receptions and receiving yards. High-paid former Ole Miss WR salaries says more about their agents than themselves.

Why begin your statement with, "I mean..."?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that sports equipment manufacturers like to sell stuff. Aluminum bats with rubberized handles to protect the hands, not one but two batting gloves, wristbands, elbow protectors, shoulder and arm padding, foot and toe guards, helmets with face protectors etc. Big money there. It's a sign of the times. No risk baseball. Starters not allowed to go past five innings. Feel something ache and straight to the 15-day disabled list. Remember Paul Shenes was pulled from a game with no-hitter in the ninth because he had reached his limit of 99 pitches. I understand Nolan Ryan threw 245 pitches in a long extra-inning game he won. Interesting fact: when helmets were first mandated in the 1960s, veterans were allowed to go without the protection if they chose to do so. The last Major League player to bat without a helmet was catcher Bob Montgomery of the Boston Red Sox in 1979.
re: What is Kelly's Status?

I'd really like to hear something a little more specific from you. What exactly is TRIPE in what I suggested? For three years LSU finished the season ranked well below its preseason forecast. A preseason No. 5 ranked team with a Heisman Trophy winner at QB and two first-round draft choice wide receivers could not make it into the Top 10. The Tigers were 4-8 against the point spread last year -- indicating to me their were underperforming. What evidence do you have to prove me wrong?
Thanks to you, Mike4lsu and OweO for your serious responses. Most others were childish with nothing to challenge the accuracy of my comments. A number of sports news outlets already have listed Kelly as being among those coaches who need to show significant improvement this year. If he doesn't, how long will Woodward stick with him? I haven't been particularly impressed so far but wish Kelly all the best. If the Tigers fail to take down Clemson in the season opener, the folks on this site will be distributing the pitch forks.
