Im melting even harder because playing Mexico would have been perfect

With the utmost respect to the Tartan Army, my Mexico hatred makes me want them to have a tougher draw than Scotland. Those boys would absolutely melt in Azteca.

This board makes me feel guilty bc I was born in the U.S. but my dad was from Argentina. He took me to World Cup games, Olympic Games, Copa games, all to watch Argentina play. It’s all I’ve ever known. So, I cheer for Argentina, but after that it’s always the U.S. I love seeing them play well, and I’m excited for them this year.

Don’t blame you one bit. Having those experiences watching them with your old man is awesome.

Jesse Marsch is masturbating vigorously to this result.

Wouldn’t they have played South Korea if SK had gotten a result tonight? Not sure that would be much tougher. RSA manhandled them.

Can some of you still see the goal T&T got to open the scoring in that match?

Sometimes I wake up in a cold sweat after having nightmares of Omar Gonzales shanking the ball backwards into his own net.
It’s like he heard Martin Tyler’s “Aguerooooooo” and decided that’s the only way to react to a goal.

Donovan has a terrible monotone, but he does say some meaningful shite from time to time. You know who also has a terrible monotone, but says meaningful shite? Thierry Henry in studio.

Studio vs broadcast are two completely different things though. I don’t care about monotone if the analysis is good for a studio guy. Broadcast guys should have a somewhat pleasant voice to listen to.
Possibly Algeria matchup aside, a Darke/Holden combo would be a dream.

I actually like Strong during the run of play, but his goal calls where he just screams the name of whoever scored is terrible.
I could use a break from John Strong’s calls

Sorry if this was discussed yesterday, but can someone explain to me why it wasn’t a penalty against England at the end of their match yesterday? Video of said incident below, thought it was odd in real time that it wasn’t stopped and reviewed

I thought it was a clear penalty on replay. Not sure what criteria was missing that prevented VAR from calling it.

Canada and Swiss are going to play to lock out anybody else. a draw advances both. And they are the kind of pussies to not play for pride. If one beats the other, they could bounce them from the tournament, but they won't try to do that.

I’d imagine Switzerland should be motivated to win. Both teams are essentially locked into 1st/2nd at minimum already. Might as well try to win the group if you’re them.

I just looked it up earlier today. If I read it right, we get 6 auto and 2 that go to a playoff with other federations.

Yikes. That is wayyy too many for our shitty region. Should have been four auto and two qualifiers.
quote:

My main complaint is that it has sort of killed my interest in the USMNT in between World Cups. It will be practically impossible for us not to qualify (it was very difficult before, but there was still enough reason to be glued to qualifiers). I know we have the Gold Cup, but the WC Qualifiers were way more interesting than the Gold Cup has ever ben.

How many spots does Concacaf get now? Before I believe it was 3 auto and 4th place had a play-in against Oceania region?

But WC is so different from the "regular season" of soccer (your various leagues etc) that it is a unique and special thing. Players playing for their nation with players they normally would not (or even play against most weekends) is super unique and different.

Reasonable take and I don’t disagree. The WC expansion doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the others, especially seeing how it has played out.

all for whatever pulls in more teams and more games.

Not to pick on you but I’m just tired of expanding every single good thing we have in sports. World Cup, CFP, March Madness, NBA playoffs, NFL playoffs have all expanded recently (or are about to in March Madness’ case) in the name of inclusion but it’s always truly due to greed and tv money.

Thankfully the group stage games have been mostly awesome.
Majority of the games have been awesome so that’s a huge plus. But I do miss in the old format how getting out of the group still felt like a big accomplishment. Now a majority of the teams advance, including some pretty bad ones.

All in all I’m fine with the change though. Just hope they don’t try to expand further.

It's Santa Maria! I've been there one time and that was once too many. Never again.

I’ve played there a few times in the last 6 months and the greens were pretty good so I was surprised. Looked like Webb greens.

What’s up with Santa Maria’s greens? I played this past Sunday and there were at least 2-3 greens with lots of rough spots.
Looking over the knockout round format, obviously with the math of 32 teams now half of the group winners get to play a 3rd place team in the R32, and the other half have to play 2nd place teams. And some of the 2nd place teams get to play other 2nd place teams rather than a 1st place team. These are pretty big advantages. How was it decided which groups got matched up?

the plain truth is the comment is just negative bullshite not meaning anything. We have a new executive and general management structure of the organization, now a new coaching staff, and we are adding to needed departments to make this organization better and still people want to stay dumb arse shite. lot of ya'll need to quit being fans.

You’re right. This organization has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt.

So if Turkey wins tonight, we have to pull for Australia on Thursday right.

Don’t think it would matter. Turkey is the only team that could pass us in the group now, and they would have to win tonight and beat us Thursday.
quote:

Is there going to be enough space to utilize that pace if Australia is willing to sit deep and concede 65-70% possession?

I imagine there will be less space than we found against Paraguay for sure. But I’m not sure we have a better option. Gio will not be able to track back as well on counters and that will be crucial today. I suppose we could move Tillman to the wing and have Berhalter start next to McKennie, but that might make us too soft in the middle. Would prefer to give Weah the start and keep Tillman central.

ETA: Forgot about Aaronson. Wouldn’t mind seeing him get the start, although he’s better at counter pressing than breaking down a compact defense.
