re: Truck bed cover

I saw an ad recently about a new Peragon cover that can fold from both ends, and can slide so you can access most of the bed without having to fold up the entire cover. Don't have any experience with Peragon but seemed like a good concept.

Ill echo what most have said. A few different options i've seen and seems like a no brainer as far as simplicity but still good quality.

- Turtlebox

- Ecogear Defender is comparable sound quality wise as a Turtlebox and a couple hundred dollars cheaper

-Waterproof soundbar like Wetsounds you can mount to the grab rail on the console and run a wire to the battery for power.

then they sell these little fruit fly traps that look like apples.

We fought these damn flies for a couple weeks before we realized they were in the sink/drain. Did the Vinegar/Baking soda/Hot water deal down the drain once a day for a few few days, bought some sticky traps that plugged into an outlet that seemed to help a good bit, and the fruit fly apple looking traps, which Im 99% sure is just apple cider vinegar.

I've been lurking on the side and would follow some of these picks to see how they perform vs the expectation and more times than not I kicked myself for not getting in earlier. I have a position in OUST and CCXI due to these threads and am up 30-40% in short time on each thanks to you guys. My question is with so much information available, how do you filter out the BS to find these diamonds in the rough. I'm sure yall have some that you feel good about that don't work out, but yall have hit bigly on several.

I dont have the leak detectors but thats a good idea. I do have the YoLink temp/humidity sensors in 2 freezers which has saved me on 2 different occasions. 1 from a GFCI outlet that tripped in my garage, the other from the door being cracked open.

To your point, I had concerns with the batteries lasting in a freezer but they lasted I believe around 2 years. Highly recommend and will look into the leak detectors too.

re: House generator

Maybe so, but I know 2-3 contacts that was in that range the last several years. There’s also a chance that the more popular and more demand in the last 5 years has more companies installing and pricing is more competitive.

I think some depends how your set up is and how far you have to run NG lines and electric hookup to the panel.

I agree on not being home when the power cuts out could make the decision on the standby easier. It’s bitten me a couple times already.

re: House generator

Posted by DuckSausage on 6/5/26 at 9:16 am to
For starters you need to decide if you want a standby generator that will turn on automatically when the power cuts out ($15-20k installed) VS a portable generator hooked up to natural gas and a 50 amp plug and interlock switch to your panel which is all manual hookup when the power cuts out but easy to do ($3-6k installed depending on generator)

I ended up getting a 15kW duromax generator that will run my whole house, house already had the 50 amp plug installed so I’m all in for $3000.
4 ton AC with soft start
2 ton AC
Pool equipment
2 fridge/freezers and standup freezer. May have to toggle oven, dryer etc but haven’t had to use it for an outage other than test runs.

There’s a Facebook group “Generators: portable generators to power entire house” that has a lot of good info on it. A guy from Louisiana actually started it in the Houston area but has grown.

re: League city fishing

League City outside of Houston? I'd google around 2coolfishing.com. Its not as active as it used to be but I bet theres some old threads that could point you in the right direction.

I've never fished it but Texas City Dike is popular public spot, and when the surf lays down May-September the trout fishing can get really good on the beach. Had a 2 day window a couple weeks ago it got good.
I have 2 Tranx and like them.

I agree on what most have said about Bates. From what I’ve figured out their model is give out abunch of reels to high profile guides and tourney anglers and get they speak highly of them. But for $400 or whatever they are, the 2 people I know personally who bought them have had nothing but problems.
LINK

This is what I use. A guy out of lake Charles I believe put it together. All this data exists in other places but he put it in one spot that has everything I need and can pick different stations throughout the coast. Also have a free app and a paid version for longer term forecast.
I've had good luck with these Maybe overkill for mounts but they have different sizes and they hold great

re: Moon Phases For Fishing?

Posted by DuckSausage on 5/4/26 at 1:29 pm to
I prefer the few days leading up to full moon but a lot of data for bigger trout that Speckled truth has put together says before a new moon is best, and before the full moon is next best. I do believe moon phases effects the bite but I dont get to fish enough, often enough to draw any real comparisons day to day.

Recent example - I generally don't like the actual day of the full moon but in early April I fished the 3 days before the full moon and did ok one day, really struggled the next, then the morning of the full moon I only had a few hours to fish and crushed them early all on topwater. Seems like during a full moon there is a mid day bite with the assumption they fed all night? I dont know really, I just go when I can and if its good I attribute it to the moon, and if it sucks I also blame it on the moon

In regards to Chandeleur fishing, I've fished with a guide a few times out there and he mentioned on multiple occasions he doesnt book trips after a new moon if he can avoid. Doesnt know why but is always tough.

In a port meeting with COE it was suggested that Joes Cove would be an excellent spot to pump dredge spoil

WHAT?!? Send that shite out to the gulf if anything. That suggestion is an infinite amount worse than returning the "waste" water or whatever theyd return into the back of Baffin bay from the proposed desalination plant. At least there's an unkown of we don't know how that would effect the bay.

Pumping spoil to an open lake removes all doubt, unless the end goal is to kill any recreational activity.

Or continue to pump it into the marsh "contained" by a levee so when the levee breaks it all dumps back into the lake like what happened on the south end this past winter.
Cool, but how about they do something about all the erosion caused by ship traffic. Rock the ship channel before the channel, lake, west cove become one single body of water. It's been talked about for 10+ years. The SE corner of Joes will be open to the ship channel in the next couple years.

Now they're pushing for no wake zones at the Old river and also at Kelso Bayou all by Spicers and on the way to Black Lake but the LNG ships and all other ships that throw 8' waves up and down the channel are no problem?

Not an attack on CCA, this is just another feel good band-aid slapped on while avoiding the much larger problem.

As far as budget goes, I was hoping to keep it 200 or under.

If Im you, I go get a $50-75 6'6 or 7' medium action spinning rod. And spend the rest of your budget on a a shimano reel - Model depends on how much left you want to spend but can get a good one for $150.

I will say, with kids it's not always a bad thing to have some rough hunts. I believe it helps them develop a real love for the good days.

Agree with this and Im still on the same lease I grew up hunting and there were plenty of days like that. I do think you need a little action to keep them interested long term. Doesn't have to be limits but a few birds a hunt and birds to see in general.

Solid Point.

This year is the first time I've questioned renewing my lease for next year. Have been on the same lease for over 20 years. We've had some good years and was actually pretty good recently from 2020-2022 but the last 3 seasons have been about as bad as I can stand and our marsh looks as good as it has since before Hurricane Laura in 2020. I've made a few hunts this year solely just for my dog.

I have a 3 year old son that I look forward to bringing in the next couple of years so I'll probably hang on to it as its not a ton of money, but if it doesn't get any better Ill have a decision to make. I've gotten to the point the past couple years where I've really enjoyed fishing over hunting in the fall and winter.

I am of the opine that whatever strain of rice they are growing now - the ducks don't like it like they used too

I just heard of this recently and surprised this is isnt talked about more. A guy on the Mickey Eastmans 610 outdoor show in Houston talked about this. Said they did a study on geese in SETX and they will not eat a certainstrain of rice that is largely being grown now.

Have a buddy that family owns abunch of rice fields in central LA and never understood why they dont have a ton of ducks and geese but they dont.

On the topic of Duck counts -- I do believe theyre off because you talk to anyone across the flyway and other flyways, no one outside of maybe the really big hunting clubs - Places like White Oak duck woods or Habitat Flats come to mind, but they could just be great at marketing and social media - are doing better than they were 5, 10, 15 years ago.

Was at the OU LSU game in November and talked to a guy, he said Arkansas is stealing all of their ducks. You talk to guys in Arkansas they say the flyway shifted west and Oklahoma has all of their ducks. Everyone blaming everyone else and IMO there just aren't as many ducks as there used to be.
I personally have no experience with Bates but the only 3 guys I know that have them have all had problems. One had a problem, sent it in for repair and next trip had another problem. Another guy had it blow up on his first trip. Some simple problems like the insert coming out of the line guide and others were bigger problems.

Idk anyone that has a deal with them but the big name guides that claim them as the best reel on the market I know all got them for free.

They may end up being ok as they’re still new to the market but for the price tag to me just seems like a good looking reel with a hell of a marketing team.

Tranx is reasonably priced as well compared to a lot of others.

Sometimes I wonder if it is the gafftop catfish explosion.

I think about this too. I've heard from some credible sources Big Lake doesnt have the amount of bait it did in it's hey day 20-25 years ago. Gaftop and Sharks were never a thought either.

I never thought about catching a gaftop on artificial and now they'll hit a topwater. Could it be they're out competing trout/reds? Is there not enough bait to grow the big trout that Big Lake used to have

Is it fishing pressure? Too many fish taken out to grow bigger ones.

....Or is it all environmental driven - erosion, destruction of a lot of reefs etc

Not sure on dolphins but I think everyone would agree they've gotten worse.
