My kids are 15 and 18. Im 48. I usually do a hunt out of state every other year. Goal is at 55 ill be able to do a nice trip every year for 12-15 and then will have to assess my health then. Try to work from hardest to easiest as i age.

You can go one of several ways.
I started in CO. I created a hunter profile on cpw and looked up dates to apply for preference points. On their website you can download their annual hunting regulations. It has every hunt code for every species in every unit. Get that. If still having trouble call them. They are happy to walk you through the process. Some units you dont need points. You can draw every year.
If you want to explore for trophy units or higher success rates on draws, a subscription to huntin fool is useful but not necessary. A subscription will run you about $200 per year if you want a hard copy magazine mailed to you. You also must get the $200 subscription if you want to be able to speak to them 1:1 for advice on where to go and when to apply. The cheaper route is the $99 onX subscription and it comes with a free digital subscription to huntin fool. You get all the same info just dont get the 1:1 mentoring.

It’s all in what you want to do. I say the absolute necessities are a good pair of hiking style boots ($200) and a bow you can efficiently shoot to 60yds ($1500+) or a rifle you can shoot to 300yds ($2000+) and a tag ($850).
Most people already have the bow or the gun so that cost should be eliminated.

Forget a lease. There is so much public ground to hunt for free, you just have to put boots on ground.
Lodging can be as cheap as a tent and hammock up to a $300 hotel per night. When we hunt around montrose we get a vrbo for $2400 for 8 days and split it 4 ways. $600 each.
So for me since i already have a bow, and clothes to wear, because weather is usually hi 70s, low 40s when we go, i can got fairly cheap.
For me its
$1000 tag, $300 fuel, $600 lodging, then its just food cost. It doesnt have to cost a lot if you hunt the millions of acres of public ground. Hire an outfitter and it starts at $5k plus all the above cost.

My buddy did it 2 years ago with 18 on a rifle hunt. I probably could have gone with less than 21 on a bow hunt but thats where i was. Fortunately i had an older friend convince me to start a long time ago to start getting points so i have lots in multiple species over multiple states. Im finally at a financial state to start burning them.
Previously we hunted OTC in 62 almost yearly.

I trimmed mine back a couple years ago and now i only get a few blooms on them vs used to be loaded. Bushes have regenerated and are about 4-5’ diameter.
Any suggestions?
