Best mattress
Posted by LumbermanRon on 7/15/25 at 1:41 pm
It’s time to replace our mattress. Our current mattress is a Sealy memory foam that’s probably 10 yrs old. It’s been ok, but was never really my favorite. It was a little firm for my liking. I’m not opposed to going back to a traditional mattress. What do y’all recommend?
re: What are the best and worst trends in new construction since the mid 90s?

Worst
Barn doors
Ornate stucco details
Glass tile backsplash
Overly cut up roof lines
Overly open floor plans i.e. living/kitchen/dining all one space
Open shelving instead of upper cabinets
Pot fillers
Best
Laundry connected to master closet
Large built showers
Separate water closets
Large islands
Large drawers instead of standard base cabinets in kitchens
Hardwood in bedrooms instead of carpet
Outdoor kitchens

Army game parking pass
Posted by LumbermanRon on 9/19/23 at 1:09 pm
I’m looking for a parking pass in the 200/300/400-403 lots for the army game. I’m going to attempt to bring my 18 month old daughter to her first game.

You are absolutely correct. That is an absolutely absurd number. 153 million for what. That number could be cut in a third and it could still be incredibly nice. Government waste at its finest.
re: New Construction Ceiling Height Dilemma
Posted by LumbermanRon on 11/21/19 at 9:53 pm to nolabuilder
There are obviously no builders in this thread, so I guess I'll give my 2 cents. You won't be wasting money with drops on 11' ceilings. 8'-12' ceilings are typically built with precut studs which are cut to accommodate for a bottom plate and double top plate. Therefore, they are slightly shorter than your desired ceiling height. If nominal length lumber were used you would be cutting every stud anyway. 8,9,10,11,12 studs are available at nearly any lumber yard today. However, you will have a small amount of waste on Sheetrock with 11' ceilings, because you will be waisting 1/4 of a sheet in every wall with this ceiling height, unless you can get 4.5' Sheetrock which is available from some material suppliers. That being said the difference in price between 11 and 12 ceilings is small in comparison to the other costs of building a house. Go with your personal preference between the 2. If you feel that 12 is too tall, 11' will be cheaper, just not by much.

You just gave proof that it's not real. Sure there are cases of misdiagnosis with any disease. Fibromyalgia is used as a "catch all" disease to make crazy people feel better and justify a treatment plan. The drugs used to treat fibromyalgia are antidepressants.
re: Pre-hung interior doors - are they all crappy?
Posted by LumbermanRon on 7/7/18 at 5:36 am to BeepNode
Just about any locally owned lumber yard should stock solid jamb doors. Just make sure you measure the jamb sizes. 95% of doors will be 4-5/8" but this is not always the case. Profile options for "in stock" doors may be limited, but there are several options that can be ordered. Most special order doors from locally owned lumber yards should take between 7-14 days to deliver, some stuff could take up to 6 weeks however. The big box stores have longer lead times for these types of things and typically gouge you on special order items. Also, if you are painting interior doors get solid core Masonite if you want a more solid door, wood will limit your options and cost more.

re: Cost to build a barn?
Posted by LumbermanRon on 3/13/18 at 8:23 am to GeneralLee
If the whole thing is concrete, just the slab would cost approximately 50k to do. If you are figuring by replacement cost, I would say around $20-25/sq ft for a wood framed metal building on slab. If there is electrical or plumbing even more. Without seeing it its hard to say, but a low ball estimated value would be at least 100k.

Cedarshield, followed by a good oil based stain like Benjamin Moore arborcoat
re: Dewalt 18v NiCad Battery Life
Posted by LumbermanRon on 2/16/18 at 9:27 am to OysterPoBoy
Nope, but don't buy any 18volt batteries. Dewalt makes a converter for 18volt tools that allows you to use the 20volt batteries. Buy the kit with the converter, 2-20volt batteries and the charger. This way you can upgrade your tools without having to get all new batteries.

Should have got the 60 volt flexvolt version. You can use those batteries with any 20 volt dewalt tool. The 40 volt battery is only compatible with the 40 volt tools.

That's a damn good price for a shadowbox fence with 2 gates.

Thanks for this thread. I am also having knee issues. I saw Dr. Mazoch at Bone and Joint. He's young so if I need surgery I'd be a little concerned. Anybody on here ever seen him for knees?
I have known this guy for most of my life. He may be the smartest person I have ever met. I wouldn't be worried about the quality of care you will receive from him.

I shoot a 150gr hornady superperformance sst. It does done the trick for me. Never rad one run more than 75 yards and he was gut shot. Its a little faster than a traditional 150 gr so it drops a couple inches less at 300 yds and a never shot much further than that.

Yeah, that price is insane in that case.
re: 6 foot pine pressure treated fence?

Ouch, are there any gates? Lots of turns/corners? Tear out of an old fence or debris/ landscape removal necessary? In level ground? All these could raise the price.
