Not me, but from a good friend
He worked for a company in Santa Monica. They would often loan out conference rooms for non-profits to hold meetings
He was at the urinal and saw someone walk up wearing amber colored glasses
It was Bono

re: What athletes do you think could succeed on the PGA Tour?
Posted by InCaliForNow on 4/12/25 at 2:16 pm
I was thinking about this relative to the thread about golf being the toughest sport - which I don't think is necessarily true,
There are for sure some sports where a rare genetic gift is a prerequisite - being able to run sub 4.5 in football; being 6'9 in basketball.
That genetic gifting isn't as big a requirement in golf, or (I think) in baseball.
And I believe being a competitive pro baseball player is more difficult than being a professional golfer.
Ted Williams - one of the best pure, disciplined hitters ever - could have played professional golf in my opinion

AAA muni yields were up 30+ bps across the curve yesterday.
Up another 20-25 today
A lot of it was driven be technicals
Let’s see what happens tomorrow.

Here's a contrary opinion.*
Rick is a smug prick.
Me being friendly doesn't mean I am turning into my parents you jackass.
*I am 60 and turned into my parents a few decades ago.

re: Can you receive social security while also getting a pension?
Posted by InCaliForNow on 3/18/25 at 3:37 pm
Not sure if this has been answered, but I started my career as a pension actuary.
If someone has earned a corporate pension, they absolutely can receive their full SS benefit.
For the most part, the same applies to someone who will earned a pension from a public (city, county, state or federal) entity.
However - I have seen public funds where the participant was exempt from contributing to SS - and therefore would not be entitled to a SS benefit if they never earned enough credits.
I've seen the same thing in faith based pensions.

Beginner Acoustic Guitar
Posted by InCaliForNow on 3/14/25 at 1:31 pm
I am kicking around the idea of learning to play the guitar. At 60, I've never played an instrument.
I'd like to start with an acoustic - but would be interested to hear if an electric would be a better place to start (and why).
I'd appreciate recommendations for a starter guitar at a lower price point - and hopefully something that I won't "outgrow" in a year.
Also - anything else I should buy to get started?
Any apps or software that would be helpful for a beginner?
Any other thoughts?

Solid list too.
Fleetwood Mac with Lyndsey and Stevie was so great.
And The Band is so underrated.
Fun fact - I saw Fleetwood Mac on my 50th birthday and Sir Paul in Paris the week of my 60th.

Solid top 5
And great point about Queen.
I am aware that them in my top 10 is based on personal preference
But - their early stuff really is great.

Flip Zeppelin and the Beatles. But they’re the clear top 2 in my view.
The Stones and Pink Floyd are the next two. Not sure which order
The last GREAT Stones album was Some Girls. Some early Floyd is unlistenable
Queen is too high. They got disco-ish in the 80s. They’re still top 10 though.
U2, The Who, and The Beach Boys should make the top 10.
Eagles belong too IMO
Guns and Roses makes 10

re: Could your wife or girlfriend solve this?
Posted by InCaliForNow on 2/14/25 at 3:54 pm
No need for the Pythagorean theorem. These are similar triangles.
So
20/x = x/5
Cross multiply.
20*5 = x^2
x^2 = 100, the are of the square

I have an uncle (by marriage) that found out he has an adult daughter
When he got back from Vietnam, he met a woman and had a brief fling
He moved away before she knew she was pregnant.
He has a super common name, and it’s not like there was an internet in the early 70’s
He contacted her, and she said she’d been looking for him her whole life
He said it was an interesting conversation with my aunt.
The daughter comes to family functions sometimes.
Her and my uncle have very similar mannerisms. Makes me laugh

Robert Duvall
He can play understated (Godfather) or over the top (Great Santini, The Apostle)
Gus McCrae is an all time great character
His small role was a high point in Apocalypse Now
And….was very funny in Four Christmases

re: Is there anything more frustrating than watching someone fumbling through Excel?

I work in financial services, started my career as an actuary, and know more excel than anyone I know.
Watching others use excel is like watching my grandparents program their VCR.
