Yes, I have 9. They all now collect dust. I used to build my own but I will say the Ender 3 is my go to machine when I need prints. It's decent for the price and you learn the basics without spending a fortune.
For software you can use TinkerCAD, FreeCAD, AutoCAd, Blender, etc. ...
