This upcoming trip will be my tenth DIY hunt in Canada. I have returned to the United States through several first U.S. ports of entry—including Toronto, where travelers clear U.S. Customs before departure, as well as Minneapolis and Atlanta.

I understand that CBP Form 4457 is recommended as advance documentation for firearms taken abroad, but I have never previously needed it to claim or reenter the United States.

Like others have said, download and pre fill out the RCMP Form 5589 Non-Resident Firearm Declaration. Do not sign it before you arrive; you must sign it in front of the Canadian Border Services officer. Bring C$25 in cash. They may accept a credit card, depending on your first Canadian port of entry, but I have always carried Canadian cash just in case and prefer to use it.

As another poster noted, the experience depends on your first port of entry into Canada and also airline you are flying. My only experience is with Delta and West Jet. I’ve flown into Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon. In my experience, Toronto is the most difficult place to initially clear a firearm, while Saskatoon is by far the easiest. Prior to COVID, Saskatoon would allow you to apply for permit and pay before your trip. Post COVID they no longer offer that option.

Before COVID, Delta flew direct from Minneapolis to Saskatoon. Delta no longer flies that route, so many schedules now require flying WestJet from a Canadian hub or Minneapolis.

Plan at least a two-hour layover in Canada. You will need to collect all bags and firearms, clear Canadian customs, wait for the officer to validate and sign your Form 5589, return through the terminal, recheck your bags and firearm, and then fill out new airline paperwork with WestJet for ammo and the firearm. The West jet recheck process is the biggest hassle.

I was lucky this year to book a Delta/ West Jet flight from Atlanta to Minneapolis to Saskatoon. West Jet does not require you to redo firearm paperwork if checked in initially thru Delta for my West Jet flight from MSP to YXE.

They only require you to fill out new paper work if you clear customs and still have a follow on flight to your final destination.

Future Drs broke into my truck in 1994 in downtown NO and stole my Ruger P93. Years later an NOPD detective called my parents in 1999 (I gave them their number on original police report) and told them my gun was previously used in an armed robbery. The perpetrator was convicted and sent to jail for a long time and the detective said I could have my gun back. He personally delivered my gun to my parents house as he lived near them on the Northshore.

I came home on leave couple of months later and traded the pistol in for a shotgun at Chalmette Jewelers!

“Depends” is the answer. I have the Delta Wading Jacket for rainy weather and wear on the morning boat rides. I also have the Fahrenheit jacket (discontinued) as a liner. If you hunt South LA, I think this is the best option in my opinion.

The Hudson jacket is way too hot for LA for most of duck season. Bought a Hudson for my son and he barely uses it unless it snows outside!!!

Duck oven is a great jacket but is not a waterproof jacket like wading jacket or the Hudson.
