GatorSports.com is reporting that Florida redshirt freshman receiver/safety Marqui Hawkins is transferring from the school.

Hawkins signed with the Gators as a receiver in 2013, but was move to defense during spring practice last year. He did not see any action on the field in 2013.

“I'm just looking for a better opportunity and somewhere I can play offense. I'd also like to be closer to home,” said Hawkins, who is from Carver High School in Columbus, Ga.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pounder was a member of the ESPN 300 but received a three-star rating from other recruiting services. Hawkins said he will be granted his release from UF this week and has no restrictions on where he can transfer.

“I had a great time at Florida and learned a lot,” he said. “Nothing against the school, I just needed a fresh start.”
During his recruitment out of high school, Hawkins originally picked Florida over Clemson, Tennessee and Southern California, among others.
