With Franklin to USC rumors abounding, do we panic yet?

Personally, I don't think so. He is getting anything and everything he wants at Vandy. He is just getting to his recruiting classes as far as players goes. The money also isn't an issue with David Williams's comments earlier this year about Franklin being in the top 3 or 4 compensated coaches in the SEC.

The one negative is that Franklin does seem routinely annoyed about the lack of attendance. However, on the flip side, there is improvement. His family also seems to love it here.

Am I just being overly optimistic? Should we really be worried that Franklin will leave?

I'm definitely worried that he is gone. The timing is good for him and he may feel he has to grab the ring while he can. OTOH, if his wife and girls are happy here, that can go a long way. Hard to know what he is thinking, but he seems very ambitious and USC would be a nice platform to work from.

Well, SportsCenter on ESPN2 currently has a "ESPN Report" on the sidebar scroller saying Steve Sarkisian has accepted the USC HC job. It's just speculation as of yet, though.

I do understand that USC is a great platform, but I think Franklin prefers the challenge of building a legacy at Vanderbilt to being another name in the USC books on some level. Obviously, he's ambitious and if he thinks he can better reach goals elsewhere, he might leave.

Oh the joys of actually having a top quality coach...

Just saw that myself. Sarkissian is probably a safer choice from the USC perspective, especially to follow Kiffin...

Much safer from the "he's been here before" standpoint. Hiring another coach from an SEC school in the state of Tennessee would have gotten quite a bit of backlash from the fan-base, I would imagine.

Not to mention relatively young and brash...

There are too many clouds over Franklin's name for a big program to risk it. All this nonsense with the prosecution in the Nashville media has to have schools like USC worried that they'll hire a coach involved in a cover-up. If Franklin leaves, it won't be this off season.

Except fan support.

He's a great coach and I really hope you guys can keep him.

ETA: NVM just finished reading your post and you addressed the lack of attendance

Still, it's a valid point and one we really need to improve upon next year.

I think if any coach is going to bring excitement and fan support to the program it'll be Franklin.

I know this is year-old data, but I would imagine attendance went up again this year, if not quite as dramatically.

I also read an interesting article today. It's a fan article, and I was wondering if anyone else had heard anything about this clause in Franklin's contract:

Coach Franklin’s contract is for approximately 3.5 million a year which makes him the fifth highest paid coach in the SEC just behind Nick Saban, Kevin Sumlin, Les Miles, and Steve Spurrier. According to a source in the athletic department there is no buy out clause. But the way the contract is written the turf on the football field that was put down two years ago and the new 31 million dollar indoor practice facility is tied to Coach Franklin and his contract. And if he leaves whichever school wants our coach has to pay off the upgrades that Franklin asked for and received.

It comes from this article.

Yeah, i had heard that it was part of his contract. I hadn't heard about the percentage of sales. Thats quite interesting. i would also like to know if that clause has a term, i.e., will he only receive that percentage as long as he is coach? CVDW knows how to keep coaches. From Corbin to Franklin, he will hold onto the best. Read this: How I learned to stop worrying and anchor down
