Ok some good guesses so some help

I was the first - answer was the first to do something

World was grey - he did it before color Tv

Out of the ashes - as discovered the word Phoenix is a clue

I came to play - sports related

Color darker than blood - haven’t seen anyone guess on this. Blood is red so a darker red

Added clue - one foot on the ground - I thought this would give it away

Another clue. The answer actually had two significant “firsts” One a year after the other

Another clue - when? HW+1

I like Uga better than a Phoenix.

And party foul - forget the one foot clue. I was mistaken

His second “first” was NFL related with the Eagles. But it was fruitless.

Another clue for the color. I would hate to be left on an island all alone.

Bingo. Jay Berwanger is the answer. Well done. Carry on

The Chicago Maroons
Phil is the mascot
jay was first to win Heisman (tho not called Heisman til the next year)
Also first person ever drafted by NFL but never played.
And I was confused by the common Heisman. Pose but the actual trophy has both feet on the ground
Once tackled by Gerald Ford.
