Within the SEC, Kirby would be right there with the Bear (he did it twice) and Saban. Pretty darn good company.
Nationally, I find it interesting that coaches such as Woody, Joe Pa, Bowden, Parseghian and John Robinson, just to name a few, never coached a team to win back to back championships. Goes to show how difficult it is to win consecutive championships.

Six teams can claim to be uncontested, back-to-back college football champions, while seven others have a co-championship as part of their consecutive titles. Here are those 13 teams, with the most recent coming before the inception of the College Football Playoff:
Minnesota – 1940, 1941
Army – 1944, 1945
Notre Dame – 1946, 1947
Oklahoma – 1955, 1956
Alabama – 1964, 1965 (named co-champions both years)
Michigan State – 1965, 1966 (named co-champions both years)
Texas – 1969, 1970 (co-champions with two other teams in 1970)
Nebraska – 1970, 1971 (co-champions with two other teams in 1970)
Oklahoma – 1974, 1975 (co-champions in 1974)
Alabama – 1978, 1979 (co-champions in 1978)
Nebraska – 1994, 1995
USC – 2003, 2004 (co-champions in 2003, 2004 championship vacated by NCAA)
Alabama – 2011, 2012

These are the glory days, even if we don't win next Monday. Smart has gotten us to 3 national championship games and at least 1 championship trophy in his 7 seasons at UGA. Incredible.

I agree ... and at my age I am glad I made it this far to experience the last 7 years. It's been fantastic .. and I don't see this freight train slowing down one bit with Kirby in charge.

yah, it is incredible. The last time we had anything similar was 80-82 and this has been a 7 year run. The early 80's teams did not dominate teams the way we did and we were one dimensional on offense. I remember watching the 82 Sugar Bowl. We kept it close but Penn St really dominated us. Then after the 83 season we basically become a mid-tier SEC team for the next 20 years. I think if we keep maintaining an elite offense this will continue. Hopefully we have some continuity plan if Monken decides to leave. It seems he enjoys his post here for now however.

USC did not win back to back NC
Everyone agreed at the start of the season the BCS determined the national championship
Which that was won by LSU
So USC did not win the NC in 2003
So UGA 13th team :-)

Also a thing to note a win would make Stet the 8th QB in college football history to win back to back titles as a starter and the first ever who started his career as a walk-on
