This matchup vs Bama would obviously be a bigger deal in the 4 team playoff and BCS era. Higher stakes.

With the current environment, I wonder how someone like Kirby will be treating these matchups going forward.

You obviously still want to win the game, but do you show all of your cards even if you anticipate facing this same team during the playoffs?

I don’t think that Kirby would ever noticeably hold back, but I do wonder if we eventually start seeing more of the NFL mentality where the first matchup against a potential postseason opponent becomes part game and part information-gathering exercise.

Probably too early in the year to even consider this but I could see it coming into play if we were to matchup with a team that has pretty much locked up s playoff bid later in the season, whether it be this year or in the future.

I highly doubt kirby will do anything less than trying everything in his power to win the game.

That doesn't mean we have to empty every trick play we have, but I refuse to believe we have some 3rd and 1 play in our arsenal that's a guaranteed conversion that may be needed late but we decide not to use just because we want to save it for the next matchup

I don't think there's enough time in a game for these coordinators to show all their cards. Every team will have dozens of plays that they never run because the opportunity just doesn't present itself. Other than that, playoff caliber teams are going to run what they execute best rather than try to trick someone. I think the whole "they were playing vanilla" gets blown out of proportion a bit by fans. These are still college kids, they need game reps on their bread and butter. You can probably expect a few wrinkles from each side this week that you haven't seen yet...but I don't think that's a case of "we've been saving that for bama" like it could have been used equally as effectively against Ohio State in the playoffs. If it was saved for Bama it's because the coaches saw something on film that told them it should work against what Bama has put on tape so far as far as how they defend this action.

To summarize though- no I don't think you'll see this because the college game is too volatile compared to the professional game.

Exactly. I mean Alabama ran a tight end double pass while up 2-3 scores last weekend. There's not really another action you can run off that, so it's not like they're putting it on tape to set something up down the road, it's just the call they thought could yield a huge play in that particular situation.

NFL is the same way really. The only time you see deviation is when a team has a secured seed and they rest the starters the final week. There are no secured seeds in college football, and you're never going to see starters rested on rivalry weekend

Yeah agree

You probably play this game straight up and then if you see them again that's when you would install something new or play off a tendency from game 1.
