Mike Elko - Bowling Green
He would come in pretty cheap as well.

Wat? You apparently have no memory of Chiz as a DC then. He was a fantastic DC, getting him would be a grand slam hire. I doubt it would happen though I'd rather have him over just about any other suggestion in this thread.
Leavitt is interesting and there are a couple others that are intruging, like the Stanford DC. However, no to Kirby, no to Foster, no to Venebles, no to Pruitt, no to Narduzzi. Muschamp isn't happening, no to Wilson, I cannot believe someone actually suggested KO as he should be gone with TG.
Shannon is another good suggestion that I think may get more traction than many expect.
What about Bo Pellini if he is fired from Neb to name other HC to DC possibilities?
There are a couple of NFL LB coaches I'd like us to look into as well in Keith Butler and Kevin Greene.

or we could just keep Grantham.

frick that.
Only way he earns next year IMO is if he essentially shuts out every opponent from here through the bowl game. I'll set the O/U on total points allowed the rest of the season at 25. If we allow more, he is gone.

Because you are an expert on defense and talent evaluation?

Compared to what we've seen out of our D staff (minus Wilson) this year? I'd say so. Half this board probably would qualify if he is setting the pace.

Grantham is the linebackers coach and the linebackers are playing lights out. Yes, Wilson is doing well, the DL is doing very well.
Safety and corner is rebuilding, the starters at safety have been in and out the whole year due to injury and suspension. How many games have Mathews and JHC started together?
One. North Texas.
So, how much do you know about defense and talent evaluation?

I'll disagree they are playing lights out. Floyd shows flashes, but doesn't seem to be improving any, and Jenkins has regressed from last year. He is a ghost out there.
The ILBs haven't been that great. Part of the problem though is that the ILB coach won't rotate them and is literally playing Wilson and Amarlo almost every down of the game.
I like Wilson as DL coach and would like to actually keep him.
Safety and corner are a laughingstock. I like how you act like the mere fact we are having to start a converted LB and a true freshman at safety isn't an issue in itself. With those S down we are starting a walkon and a true freshman OR a Jr that couldn't beat out that walkon. At CB, we are rotating true freshmen at one spot while the other has a Jr that has regressed this year more than any other player on the team.
Who is to blame for the state of that pathetic depth if not the coaches? Don't give me a cop out "injuries" excuse either, it is two fricking guys that we shouldn't have had to count on for major contributions anyway if our D staff (especially secondary) could recruit.
I don't care how many games they have started together, tbh, they haven't really been amazingly impressive even when they were on the field. Neither is very good in coverage and Matthews hasn't been close to the hype he had coming into the year that the coaches themselves built up.
As I said, it seems that I clearly know more than they do. I can at least realize that playing the same two LBs all game long isn't the best route to go to keep your guys fresh. I also know that you cannot lose a handful of guys in the secondary due to arrests, etc. and not bother to recruit to replace them without feeling some serious negative effects eventually.
Also, considering how vehemently you are defending a staff that has quite obviously failed, I'd say I know more than you as well.

Grantham sucks balls...the scheme is flawed in the fact that its just too complicated..resulting in guys out of position and looking confused and lost. the play book has also, in my opinion, slowed the development of some of the younger players. The guy refuses to adjust to the talent he has, which is his worst quality. I have watched 5 straight SEC teams score 31+ points against UGA....its depressing and downright embarrassing. I'll give you that the offense has put our guys in some bad spots on occasion an special teams has sucked the fat one all year, but those combined may be 1/8 our problem...the defense is bad, and whether it be talent, scheme, coaching, hell even motivation, all fall on Grantham, and he has failed.

This is likely the way it's going to be. I wasn't in favor of hiring Grantham because I just didn't have any experience as a DC in college. So basically it's been a case of on the job training. Grantham is in his 4th season now at UGA and what I see is a young defense that lacks depth and direction; that is they often seem confused on the field. I will put it this way: if Grantham can control Malzahn's offense at Auburn enough for us to win that game, then it will go a long way towards making me believe that he is capable of shaping a new group of players into an effective defense. Conversely, if our defense gets blown away by Malzahn's offense, then it's definitely time to look elsewhere for a DC.

What was his excuse last year when we had a team full of stars and they still couldn't stop anyone?

Depth is still a major issue. The line is the most solid unit.
Several guys like Drew, Bailey, Mayes, etc. are third year guys. Not much SEC experience but they are more physically ready to contribute.
There are 4 true freshmen backing up Herrera and Wilson. Major depth issues there.
Same with secondary. Matthews a true fr. out another one takes his place. We've had two true fr. corners start. Dawson and JHC are second year guys that are just getting to play this year. Hell, Wilkerson if for not his injury would have probably started as a true freshmen.
