probably work fine on short and inches but doesn't seem like a great bet as our go to play in short yardage if for no other reason than we almost never go under center. The fact of the matter is we got mauled yesterday at the point of attack in these situations and I don't know that any sort of running play (including sneaks) would have been particularly successful. C-Mike being unable to hold onto the ball sure doesn't expand our options either.

We probably ought to spread it out like we did on the last TD but it won't work every time as nothing does. The complaining just seems misguided as if we can just line up in the I and run at will on anyone. We can't and we've proven it over and over. And it seems to be coming from a contingent that wants nothing more than to scrap the entire offense (see "spread won't work in SEC" comment above) bc of this one deficiency

We struggled on a few things this week and I'm 100% certain the coaches have this pretty high up the list of problems to address, but the constant bashing of an OC (whether KK or Sherman) over our inability to execute in short yardage across multiple years is baffling. At a certain point, you have to realize it isn't that every single coach we've ever had is an idiot and the fans all know best.

I'm only referring to short and inches.

We seemed to get a lot of production out of the pistol run with Malena taking the handoff with a head of steam.

yeah, I'm not sure what to do about that simply bc the second you go up under center you are basically screaming "ima gonna sneak it". I hear what you are saying and I'm not saying it won't work. I don't know. We definitely need to figure out the 3rd and 2, 4th and 2 and less sort of situations.

yeah, a lot of those are traps. Our Oline is flat out great on finesse plays. They have great feet, great technical ability. They are excellent at pass blocking. Excellent getting to the 2nd level or pulling. Excellent on screen plays. They just aren't the best at power runs. They aren't going to grab the guy directly in front of them and push him back.

It's why all of our plays seem to take a bit of time to develop. We generally pull someone and lead thru the hole and use leverage to our advantage. It works well except on short yardage because they run blitz the hell out of us. It's always been a frustration of mine but it's the kind of Oline Sherman built and it gives us a very diverse offense, but it just has this flaw.

If you're going to criticize Kingsbury for the 3rd and short running troubles, he deserves credit for the call on the biggest play of the game, which was a 3rd and 2 I believe.

First off, the decision to go on 4th Down is always going to be Sumlin's. KK may call the play but the HC always makes the decision to go/no go.

I agree we have trouble powering it in short yardage. Honestly that has been an issue since a certain FB for the Dolphins left. We will get better though, too much OL talent not to and too many big backs next year (esp Carson).

You have to take the good with the bad with any offense. This offense also made it possible for us to score 2 quick TD's that won the game for us.

It is also a fallacy that the Spread doesn't work in the SEC. Meyer ran the Spread. UF under Spurrier was really a predecessor of the Spread. The key to winning in the SEC is defense, not offense. The Spread is a smart offense for us to run because Texas is filled with the best Spread talent in the country.

I also think it would have been funny if Texags existed when I was in school in the early '90s. There was no love affair with the run based power game we ran. The key was we had a ridiculous defense even though our offensive creativity was non existent. That offense had plenty of power but if we got in a situation where we had to pass we were in trouble.

I agree, but sometimes it is best to be simple and not try to be "too cute" on offense.

it didnt seem to me like they were getting too cute.

it was more the line completely failing to block guys off the edge multiple times IMO.
