Every down they were lined up 2 yards away from the GT OL. I have to think this was by design to avoid chop block injuries. My hope is that when the line plays normally that the run defense improves.

I don't know if it was by design. I'll have to rewatch but I think we were lined up normally for the first few series, but they started backing up in the second quarter.

Cut blocking schemes wear you out quickly. I played against it several times, the tendency as a defensive lineman is to protect yourself by trying to avoid the block instead of engaging. It's like taking body shots all night in a boxing match.

Those boys are gonna be sore for a couple days.

If they did back up, that might explain why we had two good stops early, then couldn't stop them the rest of the game.

I'm just glad there were no linemen injured and that we got the win.

We will be much better against traditional offense. Loved what i saw out of both our defensive ends. We should be able to get some great pressure on qbs. Gt is a different animal, we survived.

Yes it was by design. Imo turned out to be a big mistake.

I'm confident it was by design. Lining up that far back from the line of scrimmage isn't normal. It prevents the cutblocks/avoids injury but you pay a price. The OL gets a 2 yard burst and you're D line is catching rather than hitting. Imagine any OL getting a 2 or 3 yard head start against our DT in a circle of life drills. Now add in a fullback with a full head of steam right behind them. Is it really any wonder why the pile got pushed forward every time? They had 2 yards before the ball was snapped and a running head start.
We saw this all night long.

I could definitely see this being planned on. The coaches knew what was happening but are/were willing to take heat from the media and fans over the amount of yardage given up.

I'm not gonna put too much stock into how the defense played. We'll know more when we play Florida. If Florida moves the ball well on us then we'll know we have a problem
