Neymar, Messi, and Mbappe get paid a combined $105m and they have 5 goals between them. This amounts to ~40% of PSG's payroll but only ~20% of their goals.

Meanwhile, Gueye, Herrera, Hakimi, and Icardi get paid a combined $22m and have 12 goals between them. This amounts to less than 10% of the payroll but more than half of the goals.

I know Messi hasn't really had the chance to settle in, but even taking him out the analysis, the pure inefficiency of the Neymar/Mbappe duo is astounding. Extrapolating their current goal rate (5 goals in 9 matches, for a goal rate of .55) to the remaining matches left in the season (44 scheduled, not counting additional CL matches they may or may not advance to play in), this means that PSG is paying Neymar and Mbappe approximately $3m per goal.

It is worth mentioning that between the two of them, the REAL problem is Neymar, who has 1 goal (and 2 assists) and is pulling down > $35m this season. That's more than $10m per goal involvement.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Neymar is not worth the money, and Mbappe is close to being not worth it. Messi ... I guess we'll see but he does nobody any good watching from the stands. Meanwhile, the real stars of the team are guys like Hakimi and Icardi. Such a strange dynamic.

Neymar has been better value for PSG than Mbappe and I’m prepared to die on that hill

Mbappe has more appearances, more goals, a better Goals to game ratio in 1 year less while costing less money.

How are you arguing against that

1 Neymar goal or assist could pay for the entire Clermont team

Listening to a bunch of people who watch 1 or 2 PSG matches a year (if that) opine about them is something else

Neymar has looked way better than Mbappe. Neymar and Messi have incredible chemistry. They are selfless with the ball. Mbappe looked better yesterday so maybe it’s a sign of things to come.

Hakimi is just incredible, but honestly the midfield doesn’t look like they are doing a good job feeding the ball up. PSG started pulling away in the second half on long counters.

Did the $35m man show up in the biggest match of the season so far versus Man City?

Nope, unless you count his rather spectacular whiff in the box that Gueye subsequently finished for him.

PSG got a spectacular moment from Messi. The rest was Hakimi/Herrera/Gueye and Donnarumma dominating the net. Neymar really hasn't earned his salt this season, sorry man -- we can all see the tape.

Gueye was the man of the match against City, and it wasn't just from defending. Herrera has been working his arse off and scoring goals, and Verratti just came back from injury. And Verratti has always been the engine of this team when he's healthy/not suspended.

DS and TxTiger are absolutely right.
