Who was the first recruit to start that cap on the table thing? Wasn't it a Bama guy?

In fact, seems like Bama recruits were the first to use a cap, when he pulled it from under the table, and another recruit the next year had 3 caps and chose the Alabama one. Is that right?

So the Hat Selection Ceremony is now kind of, you know, old hat. But once upon a time, simply choosing from a collection of hats was considered groundbreaking. And where did the hat ceremony originate?
Tah-dah!
Dallas.
That seems to be the consensus, anyway, as most people point to the 1989 signing of Carter's Jessie Armstead. TV cameras rolled as Armstead, one of the nation's top recruits, selected from a group of hats, finishing with the Miami Hurricanes. This all unfolded in a banquet hall at the Loews Anatole Hotel (yes, a banquet hall was reserved for the occasion). That might've been the big focus of the day if not for what happened across town, as Armstead's Carter teammate Derric Evans signed with Tennessee while in a hot tub.

Evans who never made it there because of armed robbery. That Carter defense was the best high school defense that this country has ever seen.

They didn't have to kick Mike Winchell's helmet into his chin though. That was a low blow
