He was working within the rules at the time, correct. However, those rules were changed - in part - due to complaints by rival schools about a level playing field.
I wasn't slamming what Bryant was doing. I was merely answering your question.

And on a side note here's a fairly recent article on football "participants" for anyone who is interested LINK
Very common for teams to use a lot of walkons in excess of the 85 scholarship limit. Nebraska was the biggest offender in 2009 with 153 participants. Texas AM and Nebraska both had 179 participants in 2003

It's pretty universally-accepted that the 85-scholarship limit was an important step forward for the sport.
