It depends. There are really too many different variables there. Sometimes a “preseason top ten” team gets exposed through the year. Sometimes they just get ate up by the injury bug, and sometimes they just suck.

Yes, it still says No. 3 on your schedule and will continue to long after everyone forgot how bad Florida State really was.
Your point better supports the idea that all the ranking services should hold off at least 4 weeks before issuing rankings. But then nobody would have any ranked opponents in the first month.
