I mean, the War Eagle is absolutely amazing, don't get me wrong, but it's one of those things where we've been the Tigers so long (1895) that a lot of people - especially the older fans - would have a problem with us changing our mascot. And the Tiger is just as much a part of Auburn, if not moreso, than the Eagle. It would have been a really cool idea way back when, but now it would be messing with tradition to change it.

Guys, Barn just stopped using the "Plainsmen" name a few years ago (maybe 20) give them time to choose one.The school is only 150 years old and has to focus on getting accreditation.

I would love being the Auburn War Eagles but it doesn't roll off the tongue very well. Maybe the Auburn Eagles, even then it sounds weird to me though.

Changing it would ruin a few of our cheers as well, and we already saw what it did to Ole Miss.

Yeah, but the Black Bears were just way out in left field.

And yeah, changing it would not only mess up some cheers, but some songs too, like Eye of the Tiger and the Tiger Rag. Not to mention the merchandising nightmare for the first couple of years.

Edit: Wording fail.

They are waiting for LSU to change it's mascot to "War Eagle" before they make their move.

but how many Tigers? Four, Five? Let's see...LSU, Auburn, Missouri, Clemson,...and there's Memphis. Anyone else?

FWIW, we are the LSU Fighting Tigers which is wholly distinct from just "Tigers." Our mascot takes it's name from a group of fighting men, Wheat's Tigers of the First Louisiana Special Battalion, brought into being during fighting times, the War Between the States.

I know your post was in jest, but those idiots who say Auburn "copied" LSU's mascot need to get their heads out of their arse. Yeah you guys were definitely the first tigers.... Stop being so arrogant. There were many before you and there will be many after. Most commonly used mascot ever, followed by Eagles. Atleast we were smart enough to throw War in front so you can't rob us of that.

I get that they are the tigers and that War Eagle is their battle cry. I've just never understood what a battle cry of War Eagle was supposed to be.

Auburn has one nickname for it's teams: Tigers

War Eagle is a Battle Cry, Greeting, Exclaimation, etc.

Flying the eagle over the stadium is a recreation of how the Battle Cry of "War Eagle" came in to being.

Auburn has never been known as "The Plainsmen", that's the name of the school newspaper. And when referring to Auburn, War Eagle is only properly used in the singular. Other programs, such as Wayne County MS HS are the War Eagles. Auburn is the Tigers.

Found this:

quote:

As early as 1916, the Columbus (Ga.) Daily Enquirer mentioned "War Eagle" as an Auburn Tigers battle cry.[1] In the 19th and early 20th centuries, "War Eagle" appeared from time to time in the United States as a name for people and things such as Indians (including professional wrestlers), race horses, and in one case a coal mine interest.

There are several stories about the origin of the battle cry. One of these is a mythical story published in 1960 in the Auburn Plainsman and conceived by then-editor Jim Phillips. This myth is detailed below under War Eagle I.

A 1914 football contest with the Carlisle Indians provides another myth. According to the story on the Indians' team was a tackle named Bald Eagle. Trying to tire the player, Auburn began to run multiple plays at his position. Without even huddling, the Auburn quarterback would yell "Bald Eagle," letting the rest of the team know that the play would be run at the tackle. Spectators, however, thought the quarterback was saying "War Eagle," and began to chant the cry.

Another legend says "War Eagle" was the name given to the large golden eagle by the Plains Indians because the eagle furnished feathers for use in their war bonnets.

According to a 1998 article in the Auburn Plainsman [2], the most likely origin of the "War Eagle" cry grew from a 1913 pep rally at Langdon Hall where students had gathered the day before the Georgia football game. Cheerleader Gus Graydon told the crowd, "If we are going to win this game, we'll have to get out there and fight, because this means war." During the frenzy, another student, E. T. Enslen, dressed in his military uniform, noticed something had dropped from his hat. Bending down, he saw it was the metal emblem of an eagle that had been loosened while he cheered. Someone asked him what he had found, and Enslen loudly replied, "It's a War Eagle!" The new cry was used by students at the game the following day.
on wikipedia, but still a bit confused. What is a war cry used for?

The mythical War Eagle I has the most colorful story of all of the "War Eagles". War Eagle I's story begins in the Civil War. According to the legend, a soldier from Alabama was the sole Confederate survivor of a bloody battle. Stumbling across the battlefield, he came across a wounded young eagle. The bird was named Anvre, and was cared for and nursed back to health by the soldier. Several years later the soldier, a former Auburn student, returned to college as a faculty member, bringing the bird with him. For years both were a familiar sight on campus and at events. On the day of Auburn's first football game in 1892 against the University of Georgia, the aged eagle broke away from his master during the game and began to circle the field, exciting the fans. But at the end of the game, with Auburn victorious, the eagle fell to the ground and died.

This legend was originally published in 1960 in the Auburn Plainsman and was conceived by then-editor Jim Phillips. Though apocryphal, this tale is most often told as the beginning of the association of "War Eagle" with Auburn.

Well I'm learning something. I always knew y'all were the Tigers, your battle cry was "war eagle," and the plainsmen was a nickname/newspaper. I never got what a battle cry was used for. I mean, whatever city I'm in if I see someone wearing LSU gear I'll say "Geaux Tigers!" but it's more of a greeting than a "battle cry."
