I think region is part of my choice to move home. I don't think BR is anywhere near my favorite city (that would be Austin), but I love living close to NO, Laf., and boating areas. Having Memphis so close to Oxford is a huge reason I'm going to the game this year. I enjoy Beale Street on Friday and Square on Saturday.
I'm not denying region matters, just not on how good a city is. The original question does I guess throw that into consideration.

you could always go to the caterie and watch a shitty emo band play. i hear there's a really nice olive garden on seigen lane too
compared to NO, BR is boring. but you're being ridiculously critical here.

what do u like to do? i hated BR when i was 20 living there but that was the 90's. lots has changed since i moved back.

what kind of things do you like to do?

i would much rather live in NO than BR, but i couldnt' get a job there. since i've moved back, i'm super impressed at BR's growth as a city.

I generally smoke pot, drink, and read books.
That's probably not helpful. I do like to go to art museums (generally stoned) and catch plays and the like. I'm not old enough to do the bar thing yet, so I can't even take that into consideration. Really though, it's an issue of if I'm going to do the city thing I want it to be like Chicago. It's an issue of the size of the city and me being really boring.

Seems nearly irrelevant considering the Baton Rouge music scene.

denham springs or prairieville is better for living than either (if you have a family)

I get what you're saying but that's what I like best about BR. It's the perfect sized city for me. Of course the traffic sucks but I can walk/ride most of the places I go. Crime is bad but I simply don't go in crime-ridden areas. The biggest city I lived in was Boston and I loved it but I couldn't afford to go ANYWHERE. In fact, I had to live in Charlestown. Not too mention it's wicked cold yo. I guess I like mid-sized cities.

ever been to the shaw building downtown for the art shows?
hell, there was a art show my friends wanted me to go to this past saturday somewhere downtown.
I generally only go to bars in BR if there is a show happening.
spanish moon
northgate
chelseas
all three of those places are great for shows, and of course the varisty has the big name acts that come through...
I stay away from tigerland, not my crowd.
i've lived all over the country (and the world)
are there better places than BR?
of course! I love athens and san diego... hell, boston and chicago are amazing as well.
but each city has it's own brand of problems, and things that are good about them.
just have to seek out what you like to do.
and it doesn't hurt that new orleans is 50 minutes away either.
being 20 sucks though if you drink, with the bars and all, but baton rouge is pretty lax on drinking ages in general (depends on the bar)

I'm not into bands but I did enjoy acoustic shows in Oxford. I enjoy the bands that play in Tiger Plaza before games. but I don't go to music clubs. too many kids.

Well...yes, yes you can.

I understand why, it's all a matter of taste. I mean fwiw the reason I'm not in a bigger city is because I'm broke.

i'm guessing good stuff.

after living in both, NOLA blows BR out of the water as long as you're living in the city and not in metry. and as long as you are careful and can look past some of the crime issues. i never had any problems myself, but there were always things happening to different people i knew

Yes I actually have. I go down there when I can, it's just not really that convenient. I live in Dutchtown and still am not that familiar with downtown yet, but I'm getting better with it.

Yeah, but there aren't a ton of acts I've been interested in seeing. The lesson there is I should go to see bands I don't know. What's it going to hurt? Anyway, I will say this Oxford somehow gets better acts than Baton Rouge. Having Modest Mouse, Colour Revolt, Wilco, and Animal Collective coming through just this first half of the year is amazing.
