You guys can thank Tubs for that game not being 49-0. That game could have been whatever he wanted it to be, but he refused to keep the boot on the neck.

That's right. All those loses kinda blur together. I wasn't nearly as sober during football season back then as I am now.

Yes, 2003 for Alabama was similar to this year for Tennessee. Statistically one of Alabama's worst defenses ever. I think Bama gave up 333 points. As bad as the Georgia game was, Alabama at least made some sort of a comeback. Trailed 37-10 at halftime and ended up losing 37-23. The Ole Miss game was pathetic. Eli Manning lit up the Bama secondary in route to a 43-28 win. LSU beat Bama Nick Saban style, a physical 27-3 beating, but seemed like Alabama lost 44-3. To cap it off, Bama lost to fricking Hawaii to close out the year.

I still won't forget that arse beating Ole Miss handed them in 2003. It is very rare when Ole Miss puts numbers up like they did that day. It was 24-0 in the 1st QTR.

No, that was Mike Dubose. 2000 is by far the most disappointing season Alabama has had since I have been alive. Preseason #3 and they finished the season 3-8, losing to Southern Miss and Central Florida in the process. Funny thing was, Alabama was sitting at 3-6 and if they could have somehow mustered up wins against Miss State and Auburn, they would have gone to the SEC title game with a 5-6 record. The SEC west was not good at all that year. Really, the entire SEC was down that year. I believe Florida and Auburn had 9 wins in the regular season, everyone else had 7 or less.

Bama fans owe a debt of gratitude to what Shula did for Bama. The stench over their program, created by the thugs that preceded him, was still strong and he took the job anyway. I admire him for that.
+1
Shula was not a good coach, but I respect the fact that he came back to his alma mater during some of the program's darkest days when no other coach would touch us. He didn't leave the cupboard bare for Saban either.

I remember that well. I actually felt sorry for Croyle. The hit by Thurman in the second quarter was brutal.

That whole 2003 season was a train wreck. Brodie Croyle said they spent the off-season watching Miami Dolphins film, because they didn't have a spring camp with with Shula and had no clue what kind of offense they would run. During Alabama's first game of the 2003 season, the team didn't even know what to do during pregame warmups. Shula literally had 3 weeks to get his team ready for the whole season.

I think Shula would do a good job at a school like NC State, who just fired their HC. Remember the situation he walked into. I'll always appreciate what he did for Bama. He was inexperienced, but held it together during tough years. As for 2005, that whole staff did a great job. We were not real talented and had ZERO depth. Once injuries started happening late in the season, our goose was cooked. He signed some guys in '05 & '06 that helped in Saban's 1st couple of years that were of the 3-star, wanna play for 'Bama types, guys you need. Under the circumstances he did a good job & he was rewarded with a raise and contract extension after the 2005 season, even tho I believe the Admin knew he wasn't going to make it and they would change directions after probation. It was a "Thank You" gift.

I really think Shula should give it another shot somewhere. He is still young, i believe he is 48. The experience and lessons learned while at Alabama are valuable. He has a few good wins under his belt. If he surrounded himself with the right people, with his ability to recruit, he could succeed somewhere.
