That 39 was based on the number that played in the Texas Bowl last year. So, your post is technically correct. However, going into the season LSU had 77 initial counter scholarship players. Still below the 85 limit, but not quite as dire as you guys seem intent to make it. Many of the added were taken from the Transfer Portal, so they were not unseasoned or inexperienced players.

After a wave of transfer additions this month, and National Signing Day just a week away for high school prospects, here's the rundown on where the scholarship numbers stand as the Tigers continue to build on the roster this offseason.

Total scholarship count (initial counters): 77 of 85

Offense: 34

Defense: 38

Special Teams: 5

We touch on how the numbers got here in the notes below, but the Tigers currently have 77 initial counters on roster. Initial counters are players who signed with LSU either coming out of high school or through the transfer portal, which means the number doesn't include walk-ons who were later put on scholarship by Orgeron, which are often handed out on a one-year basis if teams are under the 85-man limit.
